I'd be worried that if the house fell into the basement, you'd have a difficult time getting out of it. If you knock out a door in the wall, why not add a concrete staircase that comes out in the yard. Then put a storm proof hatch over the top of staircase. Two exits are better than one.

I need to do some work on a retaining wall. Maybe that will be a good time to add a storm shelter before bringing in back fill.

I'm not sure that knocking a hole in the block wall would be all that involved. You don't need a 48" french door or anything fancy, just an access hole with a simple wooden cover. When we upgraded our AC a few years ago when we added onto the house the ac guys knocked holes in the foundation walls in several places. they just knocked it out with a air chisel.

in my mind, i saw cutting the block, using 2x6 or 2x8s to frame out the hole, then installing a regular crawl space door.

but things rarely go as smoothly in the field as they do in my head.

Now I'm not saying your house will fall but it was designed without the hole there so if you go knocking holes in your foundation you need to count for the change in the way all the weight is transferring to the ground. The problem with subs is that they don't care about anything else that they affect just as long as they get their job done and paid. I've seen holes cut in beams that went through the chord or big holes right at the edge both of which are big no-nos. But I'm not an architect nor a structural engineer so for all I know you could be fine.

sorry, not the external foundation walls, just the internal basement to crawlspace walls, ie. not load bearing.

Some of you guys know but I have been given the opportunity to move back home to Prattville where I'm from and run the nursing home there. I decided to accept it and will be moving back to Prattville.

I'm pretty excited and will have to sell my house and that jazz. If anyone knows of someone looking for a house in Hoover, let me know.

It's on Shades Crest on the bluff side in Hoover. It's a 4 or 5 bedroom 2.5 bath. It has a finished basement with 750 sq ft down there. One room that I use as a workout room could be a bedroom if you wanted. Two car garage, huge kitchen and master bath. Hoover schools. We have repainted the whole interior and are putting in new carpet before we sell it. Nice deck too. Keith and few other guys have been here.

Yup, well done, dude. Really wish I could interest my wife in us purchasing your hacienda. It's nice digs!

Wife's out of town this weekend, just me and the kiddo. I'm gonna grill burgers and drink beer Sat night starting around 7:30 or so (she'll be in bed around 6:30). Any of you guys are welcome to come. BYOB and something to throw on the grill. I'll have plenty of cooler, fridge, and grill space.

Thanks for the congrats. I'm pretty pumped. I'm going to try to buy some land down there. Maybe an offload park or a spot for Eric's RV...

So is that a 105 chassis or a guy with no clue? Never heard of a late 80 with IFS does this really exist?
