check your axle end seals and use a new gasket on the 3rd member and diffs and change the oil.....

The broken pinion shaft is the giveaway. The pin that holds it broke or backed out, then the shaft backed out and when it hit the case it broke.
Lots of hard metal has circulated in that dif and because of that it is now not worth putting back together.
I strongly recommend you find a spare diff and install it, salvage what parts you can from this one but it won't be much.
And when it's all back together, extend your breathers and don't park in water any more. That is asking for all kinds of problems.
Buy some waders or a canoe and use those instead.
