Ordering bumper tomorrow ... no swingout.... it’s true, I am using the tailgate constantly and the cost savings is significant. 6 weeks lead time.

next step it tires... I loved the Cooper stt maxx on the FJ

do I go 30x9.5 (29.69 x 9.3) or 31x10.5 (30.75 x 10.7)

open to other suggestions, but I loved the versatility of that tire.

What say you?

They best alternate option is to use 3rd gen 4Runner wheels which should bolt up correctly and give me a 16” rim ... maybe a skinny profile like 235/85 or 215/85.... I really do prefer narrow.

Edit.... I’m just going with the 30x9.5. I’m not lifting her much if any so they will look good and leave me with more power.

The saga continues.... rough idle when I use AC, AC is nice and cold, just rough idle. So I go to twist the idle controller valve... nothing... no response. So I start tracing vacuum lines... sure enough, the engine has had EGR deleted. No valve or switch on back of head, just a block off plate. How did I not look at that! I’m not that bothered by it I guess, but whatever. I don’t know how to troubleshoot the rough ac idle and I’m not sure how dependent it is on the EGR routing. It could be completely separate, but if I remember right there is some relationship. Dang. I have some digging to do.

Should I get sliders? Since I’m not putting the trim back on... looks+functionality...??? I think the only options I’m finding are weld on... but that’s not the end of the world.

I’m a little worried about adding too much weight but since I’m going with only 30” tires and no swing-out bumper it might be ok.

I’m waiting on suspension until everything is done and then I’ll see where I’m at and adjust as nessesary. The add a leaf isn’t too bad. The bumper is ordered and I’m going to upgrade the tires this week. Gotta figure out what shop I’ll use and go from there. I’ll just get 4 30x9.5x15 and keep my bets AT grabber underneath for a spare. I don’t think a 5th tire is needed. I had 5 matching for the FJ so it looked nice and uniform and the rotation lasted. But this little truck should wear just fine.

Probably mild/medium trails. 4crawler has a bolt-on option. I’m looking around. I’d prefer bolt on.

Edit: They are way backlogged and only offering kits... I'll have to keep looking around.

If I get a pair of trail gears or marlins or similar who should I get to weld them up? Looks like the only other bolt on option is rocky road.. thats like 600 bucks shipped... they are powder coated... but marlins or 4xinovations are like 250-ish.... so I guess it would depend on install price.

Just go ahead with 33x10.50s. It’s the best size on these things hands down. 🤣 They fit the stock suspension too. Another thing to consider is getting some 17” toyota takeoffs with 265/70r17s. Those work out to around 32” tall and are narrow and work with stock suspension.

Don’t worry about weight - you’d have to bolt on a lot of steel to make it noticeable. I ran 35s on steel wheels with 4.88s and stocking suspension for a while. Rubbed a bit in the rear but that was it.

Do your rear bumper, add sliders, and get gears. Buy some used tires in a smaller size to run until you regear. I LOVE my 4.88s and 33x10.50s.

Stock front suspension and about a 1.5” lift in back to get rid of the sag.

I did 33x10.5/15 on fj60 chrome steelies with a Franken build rear pack. Hammered the front seam. But...I did regear to 4.88

Pretty peppy still under 40mph.

On a stock suspension I mild wheeled on borrowed 30" wheels and stock gearing just fine, but huge difference going to 33".

Buy a soft top if you dont already have one, well worth it!

2nd gen front brake piston and mc/booster upgrade is worth the time.

And replace your seats with anything else! I rigged up some captains chairs and they're damn comfy compared to the flat stock seats.

I don’t think the diaphragm is long for this world and it’s discontinued, but some swell fella figured out that one from a van works slightly modified.

I’ll probably order that part and throw it in a drawer for the inevitable. At least for now it’s working good!
