Just needed to give props to Johnny for setting me up with the guy wanting to get rid of these tires. I've always been jones'n for a set, thought they'd be the perfect tire for the FJC, the 45 and/or the 80. Since the FJC is dead in the Dominican Republic, the 80 is closest to being used, the winner is...the 80.

I've got to get the wheels cleaned up a bit before I throw them on, but pretty psyched to get them on with the re-geared axles, etc, etc, etc...

Glad he let you know about them.
Not the 7.00R16's you always wanted but I figured you would be interested in those.

I had found a set of 7.00R16's out in Gastonia a few months back that I took a look at before letting you know but they where starting to dry rot.

Good score Jerry can't wait to see them in person.

So with Johnny's other score there will be 3 of us on Military tires now "woot"

I appreciate the eyes, wasn't really pursuing them but very glad to find some. Not truly as advertised but I get 4 good tires out of the 6 even trade for my BFG KM2's, they drove to pick them up so no cost to acquire.

Agreed, I think these will tuck nicely, I hope with the J lift & MT spacer up front. I'm not going "up" any more, will modify body if necessary to get full stuff, at least that's the idea as I sit now....

Going to look pretty cool

Debut at the meet and greet??

Glad you picked them up man! Super cool that you scored them in trade too. A trade is why I passed on these tires.

Can't wait to see them installed! Military tires FTW!

So I read, wondering the secret. Tried the "starter bump" method to no avail. Next up is the socket in the tranny hole and another huge piece of tubing for leverage...

I do the starter bump method myself. It is a royal pain by yourself. This is why i purchased a 3/4 inch gun. Way more power. Now to get the air lines i need for it.

Done the starter bump method before, I've found the best thing is a big ass impact

I guess bigger tools never hurt. I'm going to see if I can do without dropping a few $$ on a new tool.

While I had the tires off the wheels, seeing as they looked pretty cruddy, I decided to try and clean them up a bit. Well, if I'm cleaning them up, might as well throw a coat or two of paint on them. Why not make it a two tone paint, that way I can mask 25 holes too...

Truth be told, pretty bummed about the tires though. Lots of cracking that didn't show in the pics or until the tires were inflated. Lack of full disclosure on their part, lack of detail on my part. Lesson learned...

Sorry to hear about the tires upon recieving but dang..... that two tone looks hot Jerry!

I like the two-tone

As for the dry rot, the guy mentioned that there was some but said it wasn't bad and that the tires all held air. I only got some cruddy cell phone pics myself. Sorry about that man :frown:

Jerry clean the hell out of them with soap and water and then armor all the hell out of them.... you will be able to see better just how deep it may go.

No one to blame but myself for not getting more pics. Even when I saw them "live" didn't see the crack until mounted and aired up.

I'm looking up repair ideas, from shoe goo to RTV to vulcanizing patches...

'98 according to date code, another newbie learning point for me.

Again, just to be clear, Johnny only gave the guy's number whom I texted, then looked at the thread on NC4X4 (which has now been deleted) and asked more questions. I inspected all the tires tread, looked at the first couple sidewalls as the other guys pulled them off and put them in my backyard. I didn't inspect each one and the cracking didn't look as dramatic as they do mounted and aired up.

This is on me, I should have done more research, done more intensive inspection and taken my time. In hindsight, I now understand why the deal dynamics went down the way they did. However, no excuses, let's use this to help anyone else who may find themselves in a similar situation.

Looking at repair options, it looks like it comes down to RTV or this product:

http://www.alltiresupply.com/p-50.html

I'll see which may be best, thinking the "A&B" compound the best option, then see what comes of them.

The truth...

Now, to see if they are salvageable. I'm hoping so...

Go with the vulcanizer but even then I might take it to a large retreading facility to get them xray'd
