hello, i am new here on ih8mud. i was wondering if anyone has modified a trail gear 3 link to work on the rear of an fj40. thanxs ahead of time.

It could easily be modified to work on a 40 but it would be cheaper to buy brackets and build your own.

Ruff Stuff who is a vendor on MUD and Ballistic Fab both have good brackets. Some Johnny Joints, DOM, the 3 link calculator and you are good to go.:D

The 3 link would be easier to do on offset 40 axle. With 4 link you would need a custom axle center upper link bracket.

Ruffstuff makes a truss for that very purpose and they will attach and weld link brackets if you want them too.

A rear 4 link on an offset 40 axle is not hard to build considering the steel housing and the companies that make parts. The hard part will be setting up the links.

Also, keep in mind that droop on the passenger side will affect the drive line far more than droop on the drivers side.

FC187 on Pirate built a hell of a setup on Nocal40s rig, go check it out for ideas.

Edit: You posted a thread there instead of searching, go look around, there are currently 3 or 4 threads with linked, offset rear axle projects.

Um no, sorry but no you dont. And a 3link or a 4link are equal difficult to build. Both require you to look at different things but neither is harder then the other. Of course as I say that I'd say the 4link is easier. As most companies supply DIY axle trusses, it's still really easy to cut one of those down to fit the offset diff. Not that I have anything to offer for his application. But!! I do have a 4link tower that is specifically built for the FJ80 offset diff.

For the rear 80 offset diff? I've gotta go peruse your website!

thanks for all the info guys. i,ve decided on a 4 link which ill be making from scratch. since im 18 and im finishing my senior year doing home school ill have all the time in the world. my dad just bought a new MIG welder and plasma cutter so ill be making the truss my self and ill buy the rest of the brackets etc. from ballistic. i cant wait to have it linked especially with the doubler this will be a fun truck.

this is what it will be going on. ill probably lower it 1.5 or 2 inches in the process.

My last recommendation is to NOT purchase from Ballistic, they were dropped as a vendor for serious customer service and lead time issues.

Go through Artec, RuffStuff or Polyperformance but not Ballistic.

Dan at RuffStuff is a Land Cruiser guy so maybe give him a call.

Ruffstuff is hard to beat on price and the beef of their products.

I have Ruff stuff brackets and upper link bridge on my 60. Very pleased with them.

I'd personally steer away form Ballistic's stuff.

can i fit 2.63" j joints on their brackets

Yes you can.

Sometimes you only hear the bad so I thought I would add my 2 cents. I have purchased a lot of stuff from Ballistic and never had a problem. With that said I have purchased a lot from Ruff Stuff as well and they are great vendor.

after doing some research and thinking about it i may go with a lit from proffits. this way i can see how the 4 link should be installed to work properly on an fj40. and if i ever decide to link another 40 i dont have to go through the trouble of figuring out how it will work and i wont really need to use a link calculator i can copy of of that one.

I think Yotanate asked about installing a trail gear 3 link not any 3 link, it would be easier to install their rear 3 link than 4 link because 4 link is made for center diff yotas,

Yes, and sometimes you here nothing but praise for other companies. I've bought a fair bit from Ruff Stuff now and my personal experience, and that of a mate of mine, is that (from at least one person working there, I don't think it was Dan himself) the customer service sucked.
When asking multiple questions by email I'd be lucky to get an answer to one of them. Having to sent multiple emails to get all the questions answered is just stupid.
Some parts where not inlcuded in my order..... Also, by accident I ordered 4 u-bolts instead of 8, I immediately sent them an email asking if they could include four more.... Did not get a reply and when my order turned up..... just 4 bolts... Thanks alot....

Mate of mine had the exact same issue with them not answering simple questions.

Not just Ruffstuff either.... Advance Adapters wasn't great to deal with either

Rant over:D... keep up the good work !

Nice 40 btw!!!
