Has anybody here had a leak from the TFR housing or nose cone as I read it is commonly called? I originally thought the output shaft seal was the explanation for the gear oil flung all over everything but after replacing it I still have puddles every where I park. Chicago took a look (thanks) and suggested that my leak is coming from the TFR Ext housing. I am not finding a lot of info on resealing process or even what I will be getting into once I pull the bolts on the cover. Anyone been in there before???

To further clarify...
He's talking about advance adapter rear x member that bolts directly to the BACK of the cruiser t cass. It's the old style one where the outer cover bolts ON to the x member.

Not much under there it seems. Just the shaft and a bearing.

So that is the backside of the input shaft right?? I think I am gonna try and work on it tonight GF and the dog left for the bay so I will have some free time on my hands tonight might as well spend it in the garage. Im gonna hit summit on my way home and get the necessary items.

I THINK it's the idler shaft....

Just don't lay directly beneath it, or whatever gear oil is in there, you'll be drinking. ;)

I didn't drink any gear oil and did manage to pull the nose come clean it up and I hope get it sealed up tight changed put fresh oil in the transfer, tranny, and motor I guess we shall see! I ran it for a few minutes no leaks but it was parked so the real test will be when I get the drive shafts moving. I am hearing a strange clacking noise I believe coming from the transfer case after the vehicle warms that has me a bit concerned now??

Donno what that might be.
Did you try it in 4 low and 4 high just to make sure the t case is actually working?
Remember... It's a cruiser, so there WILL BE a lot of mysterious squeaks, rattles and noises.

Yes transfer case does engage and the Clacking noise is weird. It's not constant and seems to occur when there is no load on the tranny/ transfer case?

More bad news! Getting ready to leave on business for a few days ran home to pack and check on my work from last night and I have another puddle of brand new gear oil underneath the brake drum on the back of the transfer case and dripping off the drum. The truck has not been driven since I put the new gear oil in so I have to assume that the output shaft seal I just put in has not done its job! :bang: I don't have time to waste another day putting another seal back in and taking my chances on wether it's right or not I guess she is going into the shop! And recommends??

Sorry to hear your having some issue with your t-case. The cone issue should be resolved with a good gasket and some red silicone gasket maker. The seal behind the drum is another story. I have had issuses for years with that puppy. It always seemed to loosen up after wheeling a hard trail. What solved it for me was to put a washer that was the same size of the seal just under the nut. Then I tighten the nut down almost as tight as I can get it with a standard size socket wrench. This seems to stop the big flows but again when wheeling hard I might have a half dollar size of oil under the drum. But it stops there. It is a real common problem with cruisers-poor design just like the drum brake on the driveline. But it is fixable. The other noise could be trouble. We had this problem on our 69 after wheeling the Rubicon it had a noise like a whine/grinding. As soon as we got to carson city it let go and wouldn't go as one of the gears came off(the bolt holding it let go.)
The hard part about fixing the t-case is you usually need to take it off the tranny and get it on your bench. I know some guys have pulled the floor pan/hump but that is a ton of work. Good luck.

I should also mention I use red synthetic gear oil. The red stuff from summit. It tends to be much more thick than the regular stuff. I think this helps as well.

Thanks for the washer advice krusty I will give that a try I think before taking it into the shop it should go much faster this time as all the bolts have recently been off and aren't frozen from 40 yrs of dirt and grunge! Also I have some idea of what I'm doing this time so that should help!

If I recall correctly the majority of the oil leak will be from wear in the splines on the brake drum/op shaft. The larger washer plus some extra RTV sealant should help.
