TFL and the J201

Good to see the J201 in the media again. Top shelf everything thrown at it rig.

They went pretty extreme with the armor and roof storage and I guess that's a big part of the visual sizzle to establish cred. The weight and fuel consumption was a factor when they ran it in the Rebelle Rally, though that's probably just as much an exhibition rather than built for task.

Wish they would have gone with at least 34s to match the aggressiveness of the rest of the build, but they kept it rather mild with a 285/70-17 (33s).

AHC still in the game which goes to show how capable the system is. 🤙

I wish they had shown under the hood! Seems odd that they clearly detailed the whole rig but left under the hood dirty. Mostly just curious what they did with mounting the arb twin, I’m guessing a dual battery, and whatever else. Since cbi doesn’t make mounts (that I know of for any of that).

That supercharger definitely didn’t help their fuel economy! 🤣 Also agree with the tire size, should’ve gone bigger since 35’s are easily attainable.

Wondering if they’ll make a video on whatever they were doing with Lexus out there with the other LX’s and GX?

Pretty sure the dirty underhood comment is crock? I say that because I don't think I've ever seen a picture underhood of this build which suggests it's not up to Lexus snuff in terms of presentation.

Toyota/Lexus engine bays are not exactly the stuff of European cars, as they tend to focus on serviceability with lots of plumbing and electrical on top. Over lots of plastic intake plumbing. With engine covers for presentation and sound deadening on most Lexus. And with the supercharger installed, they probably couldn't fit back a cover.

Probably looks something like this. Could also be there's Magnuson branding on the S/C they didn't to show?

Maybe because it was a marketing tool for Lexus, and most people that buy a LX570 new from a dealer could care less about what it looks like under the hood?

According to TFL my rig is worth $238k. Should I sell? Or go ahead and add the supercharger and a front bumper and then sell for the even $250k?
Decisions decisions

Anyone care to venture why TFL is reporting on this now? It's old news, maybe Lexus has some announcement coming up?

I think they've talked about it in a previous video. I believe Toyota and Lexus just had some recent press events so they're covering them as any media outlet would.

Yeah, there’s no way the mods that were made cost anywhere close to $100K+, even factoring in the Magnuson supercharger. That estimate was laughable.

Some of their other recent videos strike me as poorly done as well. I watched one the other day where they compared a stock Touareg to a lifted Grand Cherokee with lockers, sway bar disconnect, and mud tires. They seemed a bit amazed that the Grand Cherokee had better traction on the hill climb they compared them on. Quite frankly, many of their vehicle comparisons really boil down to which vehicle has the more capable tires. I get that their goal is usually to compare the vehicles as they come from the factory, but once one is modified, it’s only fair to give the other one comparable modifications.

tried figuring out more abotu the airtec snorkel, even the TJM dudes didnt have an answer on what kind of modification was done. Im itching to get a sleek looking snorkel on my LX

the TJM snorkel can be made to fit an LX with some modifications. I have a TJM clone snorkel on my LX and it fits fine. The airbox inlet shape is different, so that has to be dealt with. Or you can try to source a diesel airbox.

Snaked a peak under the J201s hood.

We (Cruiser Outfitters) modified the Airtec snorkel body, SAIS hoses, etc. Turned out quite clean imo.

I've got dozens of underhood shots from the build. I think it looks handsome. Can't say why it wasn't opened at the press event but it had just been used on a bunch of press runs. Could be the Magnuson unit? Not sure.

No dual batteries and a Slee mount used for the ARB Twin Compressor.

Would the super charger hurt or help with fuel economy? I imagine day to day it might help due to to the bypass valve but it will drink up on hard pulls.

also anyone know 0-60 or other performance metrics with super charger?

I thought long and hard about buying one but ultimately decided against it because the point of the rig was reliable long term cruising. Better off setting the $$$ aside for a 997 Turbo.

I think the bigger concern would be what the super charger would due to long term reliability of the engine. If you aren't driving it hard, I suspect fuel economy wouldn't change by much. But I'd love to drive it to see how much of a difference the super charger makes.

I can’t speak to the J201, but I’ve owned several (five?) supercharged vehicles including a 80 series that I installed a TRD supercharger on. For day to day driving a supercharger doesn’t do much to fuel economy. Since the 80 was normally aspirated, then I put on the SC, I got some good seat time to compare before and after. For that vehicle, it was a completely different vehicle with the supercharger, especially when towing. After the install, it could actually get out of it’s own way occasionally, and it was a much stronger hill climber. Generally speaking, I tend to get worse fuel economy with boosted vehicles, because I drive them harder, not because of something inherently detrimental to fuel economy in the supercharging (or turbocharging).

I’ve spent a great deal of time driving SC’d 200/570’s but never done any 0-60 type measurements. Would be fun. I’ve got a non-SC 2008 and a SC’d 2013 (both 6spds). The difference is extremely noticeable :D

550hp & 550lbs-ft at the crank post install fwiw.

Obviously this depends on a bunch of things, but anywhere from 3.9 to 6 seconds (6 seconds is for the limited edition 2014-15 LX570 supercharger (450HP)).
For instance:

Here’s a screen grab from a video of a supercharged LX with 14 psi of boost and some other mods:
