Hey guys, I know there are a few threads regarding Tesla style head units, and I have read through most of them, but I'm finding most of the threads are for specific models. I figured I would create a thread for general random questions, and I have a few.

1. So far, I haven't seen any units that include XM radio with an antenna, so you have to use the app. My question is, are you able to scroll through the channels with your steering wheel controls like you can with the stock head unit? I guess that would be for radio as well? Right now I can seamlessly scroll through FM and XM on my stock unit, and I'm wondering if that's possible with a new one.
2. I believe you can download the Waze app to the unit and use it for nav, right? I'm planning on either getting a hotspot, or some of the units I've seen have SIM cards, so I would assume Waze would work with that.
3. This is more of a general Carplay question, but if I can get all the apps on the head unit (Waze, XM, Netflix, etc.), why would I really want to use Carplay?
4. Is it better to get a newer version like Android 10 or 11 instead of Android 9, or is Android 9 better and get Sergey's firmware?
5. I've got a 2013, so any problems with the backup camera? Is the video quality the same as stock? Will I still be able to use my side and front cams?
6. I've recently discovered this style and thinking about going this route:
Does having the faster processor and more ram help with boot up time, or is that not really an issue any more?
7. Do you still use the stock USB outlet next to the cigaratte lighter? I'm assuming it connects directly to the unit?

Okay, sorry for all the questions, I've been kicking tires for so long, but these questions are still bothering me. Feel free to add any more random questions to the thread, and thanks in advance. If I decide to pull the plug, I'll do a write up.

I have a feeling this thread is going to need some help. ;)

Keep in mind that some things, such as factory camera compatibility, are going to be very different depending on the model year of the vehicle.

1. I have heard that some of the newer Tesla style units include XM satellite radios. But I don't know if there are any that are available for LC's yet. At least with Sergey's firmware, you can program the steering wheel controls to do whatever you want (within some limits, of course).

2. I believe you can download the Waze app to the unit and use it for nav, right? I'm planning on either getting a hotspot, or some of the units I've seen have SIM cards, so I would assume Waze would work with that.
Yes, in general you can install whatever apps you want from the Google Play Store. For Internet access, you need either a hotspot or a unit that supports a SIM card (and a compatible data plan, which can be a challenge to find).

3. This is more of a general Carplay question, but if I can get all the apps on the head unit (Waze, XM, Netflix, etc.), why would I really want to use Carplay?
Because CarPlay apps are almost always optimized for use while driving. Think less complexity, larger buttons, etc. The normal version of Google Maps, for example, can be difficult to use while driving.

4. Is it better to get a newer version like Android 10 or 11 instead of Android 9, or is Android 9 better and get Sergey's firmware?
A newer version of Android (but make sure that's what you're actually getting) will be better long term as you'll run into fewer app compatibility issues. Sergey is apparently working on adding support for newer versions of Android. So you have to balance these 2 things. It's going to be harder and harder to find Android 9 units though. At this point, I would probably give priority to getting a newer version of Android with the assumption that Sergey will support it at some point.

5. I've got a 2013, so any problems with the backup camera? Is the video quality the same as stock? Will I still be able to use my side and front cams?
Someone else will have to answer this as I have a 2020. My 360 / backup camera works great with the Tesla style unit I went with.

6. I've recently discovered this style and thinking about going this route:
Does having the faster processor and more ram help with boot up time, or is that not really an issue any more?
Faster processor, more RAM, more storage space are all pluses and will make boot up times faster, apps more responsive, etc. The only real concern with a faster processor would be related to overheating issues.

7. Do you still use the stock USB outlet next to the cigaratte lighter? I'm assuming it connects directly to the unit?
That depends on what the wiring harness includes, but it is possible to hook the stock USB outlet up to the unit if an appropriate adapter is included or available. I have my stock USB outlet hooked up to mine.

Thanks, some good info here.

I’ve got a 2013. Cameras all work. Resolution of screen is better but cameras still suck. It’s all usable but it will make you want to upgrade the cameras.

Do you mean the factory cameras? Do the rear camera guidelines still orient themselves when turning the steering wheel?
Does the front camera still has the split view and the guidelines for the side of the truck? Does is still coming on when you slowdown under certain speed?
Or is this functionality only on 13 LX?

Regarding #6- note it is installed in overseas versions with OEM HVAC controls separate from the stereo. Look for a U.S. compatible version...

All of the works with the OEM cameras. The LC is the same as the LX.

Regarding #2, I was never able to get mine to connect to the network data. It would accept the SSID and password, but the built in Google maps app would show a blank grid and never loaded map data.

Hence #3, CarPlay became a necessity.

Buyer beware.
What unit did / do you have and were you using a built in SIM card? Since my Tesla style unit doesn't have a SIM card slot, I've been using an external hotspot connected via a USB Ethernet / hub (it has a network jack, 4 USB ports, and a USB connector that goes to the unit) without any issues. Lots of people are using the hotspot functionality on their smart phones to give these units Internet access as well.

At least on newer model years, the LC and LX infotainment stuff, including the cameras is different AFAIK.

@doru - if buying a replacement head unit, definitely make sure it's compatible with the specific vehicle it's going to be installed in. Compatibility with a 2013 LC isn't enough assurance if you have a 2013 LX.

I just meant what OP is describing as for the cameras on his 13LX is the same as my 13LC.

I actually have a LC, not an LX.

I'm glad you mentioned that. I was actually wondering how the HVAC worked with these units. I'll have to see if I can find one with the controls built in. Thanks.

You probably already found this thread but just in case:

Because CarPlay apps are almost always optimized for use while driving. Think less complexity, larger buttons, etc. The normal version of Google Maps, for example, can be difficult to use while driving.

Came here to say this. I have a Grom VLine that has both CarPlay and can run android apps. The CarPlay versions as way better for use while driving.

I had a “Tesla” unit from Phoenix for my GX470. Tried connecting to my house’s network and my phone hot spot. Never had any joy with either connection.

Very useful to have a thread like this. Is suppose new questions can be added. My used LC J12 2003 came with a Chinese 10.4 tesla style radio and I am very happy with it. It does navigation, spotify and rear view camera. I would like it to be a bit quicker, but maybe this has improved in newer generations.

Question #7: Did anybody accomplish a full integration with the onboard Toyota amplifier (I think it is JBL) including the fading (front/rear volume) control? The radio has four output channels FL,FR,RL,RR. I suppose these are amplified channels. Only FL and FR are actually connected to the stock amplifier (at least with the Radio connector in my car).
The stock amplifier supports 4 channels in front (R,L and high and low separate), 2 channels in the back and a subwoofer.

When I try to fade the sound to the rear, the radio goes silent. I guess this is because the new radio fades the FL and FR signal, combined with RL and RR not being connected?
But it is also very well possible that my speakers are not wired up correctly, the car has had a long history begore I had it. For me it would be interesting to know if others got the system working 100%.

I have a 2008 model with a Tesla from Phoenix. I could not get the rear camera to work.

Anyone else have a 2008 that could share how you got the rear camera to work?
