Tempted, but 206K

I don't want to talk you out of the 100, because they are great trucks, but >200k miles is a lot of miles for a new to you truck. It is not hard to find 100s with less than 100k miles that are not much more money. I don't know of any particular issues with that sort of mileage, but in my opinion the V8 is more difficult to work on than the I-6. I think the engine is pretty reliable, and the transmission and transfer case are essentially the same as the '95-'97 80 series.

You definitely want to know what service has been done, but you probably won't know since it is being sold by a dealer. At that mileage the timing belt should have been done twice (90k, 180k), water pump a couple of times, and starter very likely. The CV boots on the front axle are prone to leaking, so I would recommend checking them.

FWIW, I would recommend a 2000+ model to get traction and skid control for safety. You can always add a locker(s) to a 2000+, but you can't add traction or skid control to the 1998 or 1999... In 2003, the transmission was upgraded to a 5-speed which should improve the mileage a bit. We just drove our 100 on a 3000 mile road trip and hit 17 MPG several times between fill-ups (with the 4 speed). :)

Thanks for the info on the 100.
Yeah the tires are new.
The dealer says he has the service records. Its a Va Beach truck and the Carfax shows one Belt replaced.

I think i'll just wait for somthing a little newer if we go 100. I always have my eyes open for the perfect 80. (97, white, locked, low miles, mild lift/tires but never wheeled, etc)

If I see it still on the lot in a few weeks maybe I'll low ball him.
They probably only gave him 6000 for the trade in.

Thanks

And a winch in a box in the garage;)

I bought my wife's '99 in 2007 with 192K, and I had the same worries. Ultimately went for it and it was a good decision. She has 243K or so now, with no issues other than the ABS pump going out, which I replaced with a used one. I even converted to synthetic fluids with no issue.

If you can get him under 8, I'd do it.
