Hello all,

I am reviving a 1985 pickup with the 2-LT. I've I picked it up about 2 years ago with a broken intake rocker. Pulled the head, had the values done, sent the IP for rebuild, along with the injectors. New head gasket + reseal. The motor is solid with ~400 psi compression with biggest difference of 25 psi. Now, after all that, I am chasing down a rough idle/smokey start. I've gone through my super glow system multiple times. At this point, I am running my 12V relay with a switch (2-4 second glow does the trick). I am still having the rough idle; however. No power loss at high RMPs as far as I can tell.

I'll include a video of the truck idling. It seems to improve sltighly once it's hot. This makes me think the IP might be off (losser tolerances at high temp). The shop I had do the pump and injectors were not familair with the pump at all.

As far as timing goes, I've tried adjusting the timing with a dial indicator twice. I've also pulled the timing belt multiple times, thinking I skipped a tooth (no evidence of that). The best I have been able to get it to run has been by maunally setting the timing while running (pry-bar method). Power balance seems about equal across all cylinders on craking the injectors. I have a spare IP pump which I am planning on repalcing soon.

Link to running:

Yes, I'm aware I am missing a few timing cover bolts, fan shrowed and have a head cover gasket leak.

Please let me know if you have any ideas.

Thank you!

How are the engine mounts?

I've always found the little 4 cylinder L Series Diesels to have a slightly sub-optimal idle, maybe its just the nature of the 4 cylinders. The 6 cylinders idle much more gracefully

Sounds absolutely fine to me. 4 cylinder engines are inherently unbalanced and the L engines don't have balance shafts. They are also very high compression so you can expect them to rock. You can try adjusting the idle speed to find a sweet spot, but I think Duncan's advice on engine mounts is good.

You're good to go. They are just clunky little engines.
