I'm putting in a late model Ford sterling into my 60 & I never had the Vss sensor working. The Sterling has a 120 tooth ABS reluctor ring with a sensor that looks just like a VSS sensor. The only problem is that with 4.10's this would only supply about 29 cycles per driveshaft revolution compared to 40 that the VSS usually gets.

In my thinking, with all the different tire and gearing combinations, the VSS would only send ball park speed information to the ECM anyways. Would it work to use the Sterling for a VSS? otherwise I'm SOL running a VSS with my doubler since I don't want to do a bunch of machine work to the speedo portion of the 205.

The engine has over 80k on it with no VSS(the PO may have had a chip burned to ignore the VSS, but I have no documentation on it) but has always run a little rough when cold on cold days. Also, I would like the option of being able to go with any late model GM V8 if I so desire & they all require a VSS.

All of this only came up last night while I was putting a Detroit into the Sterling.

How about installing a VSS sensor inline with the speedo cable at the transfer case?

it possible but I have not researched that. If I could use the sensor on the sterling it would make thing easier. Where do you find a vss that can work on a speedo cable? I recall somthing made by Jags that run but i have not looked into it.

I believe Howell fuel injection makes one.

Downey Off Road also sells them. They sell the Stealth Industries (Jags that Run) VSS too but it is is a little more.

I've used this in a 350TBI conversion in my 60. It worked pretty well. The 350TBI worked fine without a VSS though too. And I didn't have a special chip burned. Out of all the sensors I think the VSS is one of the least important ones in manual transmission conversion.

thanks for the link woody! I need to go thru my wiring a little more to figure out how the VSS is wired. I still need to figure out how to connect the stock 60 speedo to the 205, maybe one of the jags that run sensors will help.

Thanks for you replies. doesn't look like the sterling sensor will work (way too many pulses).
