Lawrence (Blue FJ), Ali and I went to the Tank Trap on Saturday with the NM 4Wheelers. I am not sure that whoever pioneered the trail had our 80 series in mind but I definately felt trapped :o

Here are some pics of the carnage incurred to my poor exhaust system...

maybe I should post the pics?

cat got pushed into the body

muffler got pushed into the driveshaft

the fix was to disconnect the cat from the muffler:

so now I have the redneck straight pipe sound :hillbilly:

so....

should I just get from the cats back replaced? How much beating can a cat take and still work? I would love to be rid of the below the frame portion after the second cat and get a smaller muffler.

I'm certainly no exhaust expert, but that seems reasonable to me. I would think as long as you don't have holes in the catalytic converter (or they're not smashed flat), it seems like they would still be functional. As I understand it, they're also very pricey (at least the Toyota version), so I wouldn't replace them unless I had to.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but hopefully most of the damage to the cats is to the heat shields and shouldn't affect the inner workings.

I also agree with your idea of getting rid of the exhaust routing below the frame. The earlier 80's kept all the exhaust above the frame rails, so it's more protected. However, sometimes the passenger complains of "warm feet" due to the floorboard heating up above the exhaust. (It doesn't bother me - I'm in the driver's seat! :steer:

In terms of protecting your cats in the future, take a look at the Hanna sliders. I know you just built your sliders, but you may want to rig up some sort of cat skidplate like the Hannas offer, to avoid problems later.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. Sorry I couldn't make it. I've only run Tank Trap once, but it was a fun trail, and now you've got the carnage to prove it!

Dear Rory,
The objective is to drive over the rocks, not through the rocks. The small ones will move. The big ones won't.

Think straight pipe front to rear and move to Sandoval county with the other deadbeats that cannot pass emissions. (No offence Onur)
