Im new to MUD but have 2 fj40s that I will be building.
My interests right now is to mate a cr-01 Fj body to a more realistic scale chassis.
So my ???? Is what chassis do you recommend and what chassis is possible for a scale look.
My wants are along the line of the highlifts, rc4wd trail finder or possibly the sx-10.
I like the leaf spring look with more metal less plastic while still achieving a fun capable trail crawler.
Thanks in advance

I picked one of these up used off ebay, but RC4WD stocks them:

Kinda pricey, but really solid. They also make a v8 and tranny that drops in and houses the motor-very scale looking.

If you go the sc10 route,by the time you add up all the $ to convert to leafs and bumpers it comes close to the cost of the fracture set up.

Hope this is useful-Billy

SCX-10 is a great chassis/axle combo. But if you want to use any other type of axles, motor/tranny, it will be alot of work. I am considering swapping chassis so I can go to another style axle. I have looked into modifying my SCX-10 chassis to run different axles and the cost is about the same as a new chassis. Considering mine is bent, it's pretty high on the list.

Started a rc build, buying time to restore the 78 fj40.
I went with the rc4wd trail finder chassis over t-rex 60s locked.
No electronics yet but looks cool
Body is a proline bushwhacker with tamiya grille.
Pipe work really sets it apart.

If you are after a true scale look, I would say you can't go wrong with the Trail finder chassis. It has the leafs that will give you the fj40 look. If you want something that handles well the SCX-10 is probably one of the best chassis out there for that.

I am thinking of picking up a trail-finder myself, mostly because I love putting things together and the RC4wd kits are pretty sweet.

Let us know what you decide on.

My trail finder, is a pain in the ass. The leafs bend under heavy load, and little to no flex in the suspension.

Interesting, especially since I am debating on a Wraith or a Trailfinder 2. I am now leaning toward a wraith since I want to run a lower turn and be able to do some bashing around. Guess that's the big question: how are you going to use it. A wraith with a FJ40 grill to keep it in the family and a RC4WD 2 speed kit... :hhmm:

I'm building a KOH buggy right now, I plan on a 2spd with Tekin Pro4. It's going to be a monster. The Wraith is a great intro to 2.2. But I find it very top heavy, and not very good on the rocks. Wide open slick rock is great. Any tight areas and you are wheels up constantly.

What Chassis are you using? I just used my Christmas Money to pick up a Wraith Kit and ordered a RC4WD 2 speed trans and an CR01 FJ40 Grill for it. Do you think adding some aluminum axles to increase un-sprung weight would help with stability? Will start a build thread once I get it started as well as one for my old school bruiser resto-mod.

Edit: I must apologize to Matt037796, I just re-read thru this thread and realized that I was posting on something that you had already chosen. I initially didn't realize that you were the OP and when looking at this from my phone the avatars don't always show up and it wasn't until I got on a real computer that I realized that you were the OP and had chosen a TF chassis. To that end, what are your plans for the electrics? And did you make the "TOYOTA" insert in the grill or did you pick that up some where? I want to give my Wraith the same front end treatment, and the corner decals too, I mean it has offset axles and even though they are to the wrong side, I know if is a Toyota at heart.

I order a tamiya grille and a decals set for the cr01 land cruiser

With some minor mods, the Wraith does great on the rocks. Weights in the front wheels, cut foams, move battery to just forward of cab, soft springs all around and it'll stick pretty well. Its limitation is width IMO. Like comparing a full-sized truck to a 40 or a smaller pickup, there are just some trails its going to be too big for.
