As much as I've been wanting a 200 series, the price is hard to justify

Looking at a 16-18 Sequoia's - anything I should be aware of when looking at them? e.g. rust?

End goal is 98% daily driver, home depot, kid hauler, with the odd off road back country excursion

Probably would do a 2" lift, and some TRD goodies ( a clone if you will )

Does the Tundra bumper direct swap over or do you need the entire front end? ( asking bc of the corner clearance )
far as i can tell you need it all - i was hoping for a semi hidden winch -_-

You're in ATL, rust won't be an issue unless you purposely look for one in the snow belt [don't] and even then a 16-18 unless it has not been taken care of at all will not have rust issues. The Sequoia is a great truck and a capable hauler and mild off-roader/overlander. Not as much aftermarket support as an LC/4R/GX though. If you don't need all the space I'd say look at Lexus GX as well--that is a great platform. Neither will be nice to you at the pump but that is really my only negative about the truck [but the LC also sucks on gas so that's the price of entry for a reliable simple big V8]

I do look a little further out sometimes, but only because I'm a snob for colors - e.g. gold/beige, green, etc.

For the price of a GX470 it seems like I can buy a Sequoia with less miles. Not saying that isn't the way to go, heck I convinced my sister to get one. Just that $15-20k for one with 200k on the clock is a bit insane.

Yeah, I wouldn’t want any of those colors either.

You can find a 1st gen with less than 200kon it for $5,000 or less. The 4.7 is an amazing engine, and unless you just “have to have” the irs found in the 2nd gen, I’d look at and drive some first gens too. Just because a car is newer, doesn’t make it “better”. Especially once you get past 100k on them. I’d take a 200k meticulously maintained ‘03 over a “deferred maintenance” ‘16 any day of the week. And likely save $10k plus in the process.

haha I meant that those are the colors I really want ( not that I'd overlook a white/grey/silver/black, just not #1 preference)

I lean towards the 2nd gen because of ISOFIX - I have a two year old, and another on the way, so the safety component is something I'm big on ( and I know the 18+ comes with the Toyota Safety Sense ). Not discounting the 1st gen at all, I just haven't given them much of a look.

I hate how people defer maintenance - thankfully there's a Lexus/Toyota specialty shop near me that I can bring anything in for a PPI

I have a 2021 Platinum and I absolutely love it. I plan on keeping it for a super long time. Right now I live in VA but I'm planning on moving south within a year or two so I'm meticulous about pressure washing any and all salt off of it as soon as I can. I think it's a really practical vehicle if it's something you are going to keep for a long time. It definitely sips on gas, but you don't pay in maintenance so I consider it a win.

I think for your purpose it would be great. The inside is huge and I always leave the third row down so I have quite a big area to just put skis, bags, my dog, etc. when I go on road trips or anything else and can still fit four passengers if needed. If you ever need to tow a trailer, the 5.7 has enough power to do that as well and it has the bigger Tundra brakes which is nice. Since you plan on doing a lift, I wouldn't get the Platinum version as it has the rear air suspension. I also went down to 18" rims instead of the stock 20" it came with to get a little more aggressive sidewall and AT tire. So far I'm perfectly happy with it.

This is literally the worst possible time to want a 200 LC, or any LC. If you can wait this out, you could probably get what you want in a couple years for a much more reasonable price. Let these new Sequoias, Tundras and LX600s take some pressure off the market.

Same for me.

What tire size did you go with?

Yeah - its crazy how 2008's are asking $45k !

I think the Sequoia is the most under-rated Toyota.

The aftermarket has been a little stale for a while but here at Tandem Offroad we have been pushing HARD to develop items for it in the past year.

The Sequoia has some really good selling points to it:
  • Biggest advantage of the Sequoia is DEFINITELY the copious amount of interior space. It's just amazing the amount of room you and your passengers have.
  • Transfer Case: 2HI, 4HI, 4HI Locked, 4LO, 4LO Locked. When you're driving it around town just leave it in 2hi and you dont have to worry about torque steer. If you put it in 4HI you get full time all wheel drive with a TORSEN center diff so you get that cool power transfer to the axle with the most traction.
  • Turning radius: It's better than a 200 series. 200 series does the offroad turn assist and THEN it turns better than a Land Cruiser, but in day to day scenarios the Sequoia has the advantage.
  • It hasn't been "discovered" yet so you dont have to pay the LC/4Runner/Tacoma Tax (but you still have to pay the toyota tax)

People say it's only good for "mild" offroading but you can do basically the same thing all the other Toyota's can do. Not the same as an 80 series but I'd comfortably follow a 200 or a 100 series anywhere. It does not flex worth a crap. You'll be lifting tires everywhere but I havent gotten stuck yet so....

I definitely have my sights set on a Sequoia, it's nice to know someone in the aftermarket is working on them. Also nice that you are local.

Alright Mr Tandem. Science you are going to start posting about your products in most of these Sequoia threads, how about you make some stuff for 1st gens too? A nice ARB style front bumper with the full bar work would be a place to start:hillbilly: You know, something that doesn’t look like you took a big axe and chopped the lower jaw off a cows face? Approach angle is nice, but all the offerings I’ve seen have about a 2” strip of steel in front of the tires, and it looks ridiculous. I’m more interested in animal strike protection and a place to mount a winch than whether or not I can drive up on top of a 3’ boulder withoutscratching my bumper...

@JLo with Tandem

I hear they are cheap to buy. “R&D tax write-off” anyone??
