Here are some pictures. I got the 40 from a father and son in California, very nice people, who got it on a trade as the usually deal in classic Chevys. They knew some about it, but not a ton. They were great and sent a ton of videos and pictures throughout the week and really came down on the price for me. It is a running, driving, stopping 40 that is mostly original but still has plenty to do. Frame is super solid for something in my price range.

I suspect, from picture and video review, the PO took some things apart on the front to do some interior painting and never finished putting all the wiring back together before they traded it to this family. Immediate concerns will be complete fluid change, wiring to get her safe and legal, Underneath cleaning and woolwax, patina preservation on the body... I need to look into that. Then I will get into other things like weatherstripping, top repair as needed. I am sure I will run into more surprises. I may have a good deal on a tan used soft top too! Other parts shipping with cruiser are original winch, spare, 4 speed tranny, bag of parts (Hopefully the heater hoses!) and some power steering conversion parts including new column.

Enjoy the pics.... remember this isn't a 20,000+ dollar 40... this is a budget cruiser to be fixed up and preserved as long as possible for a fun occasional daily and some chill off-roading trips. No plans to make a museum piece, but I can really make this a fun, cool 40 I believe.

Thats it for now... the rest is video format mostly which I can’t post... It does have an electric-in line fuel pump instead of the mechanical... not sure how I feel about that yet... My first 40, so I have A TON to learn while fixing her up. But she sounds awesome and looks about as cool as it gets (other than a tan soft top and tan half door covers : ) )

Like it or not, she is mine now. Just paid the transport company so we will see soon!

Looks awesome, I’m stoked for you! 🦀 🔧

Nice! That looks to be a factory soft top (FST). You might consider just getting a Metal Tech roll cage instead of a factory roll cage. Especially if you plan to wheel it some.

Those seats are cherry!

YES! In probable order…
Complete fluids change
Electrical work 🫣
Heater work
Frame cleaning and woolwax
Body patina preservation
Weather stripping
Springs and tires (33x10.5 or 9.5)
Traditional soft top and roll bar
Axle work with possible e-locker install

Additionally, there is a sweet old winch I plan on cleaning up and putting new rope on that they included. There is also a 4 speed tranny but I will likely keep the 3 speed in.

There is going to plenty of other stuff that pops up I’m sure. All this will take a while. I’ve already done it all in my mind. The honest first step will be cleaning, CLR… and poppy’s patina, and getting all the lights and gauges working. I’ll probably throw new points and cap on at the same time but it sounds like it’s running good on the videos I was sent. I’m just really excited to be back in the game and have an actual FJ40. Should be shipping within a day or 2.

I’m most intimidated by the electric, but I don’t think it will be too bad.

Oh yea! The Jackson looks dope. I will need to upgrade my welding setup for that thickness. The 140 might not penetrate well enough. I like that. Shot them an email. He said it could still work with bows and factory style soft top.

Update…. 40 should be here Friday afternoon!

The 40 should be here tomorrow. With today’s weather it is a perfect time to talk tires. I am going with a Kenda Klever RT 33X?x15.

Question is…… 10.5 or 9.5….. I am extremely torn. I love a true pizza cutter…. But is 9.5 toooo skinny? Also… I am not sure the wheels match on the 40… I think they are close though. 8 spoke wagon wheels…. I’ll need a matching spare. So I could find a wagon wheel. I think one of them has the stripe…. Nothing paint couldn’t cure.

So, what say you? Klever 10.5 or 9.5? I’ll load some images up later for comparison.

And…. Should I get “new” wheels or stick with the wagon wheels that are on there?

I’m leaning towards the 9.5

I think you should take advantage of the current 25% off sale and get a set of OEM steelies, paint them with Massie Ferguson gray tractor paint and get the 9.5 tires.

I've used Jim Hudson out of SC a bunch lately. I bought my GRC from them and their online prices match or beat most of the other SET dealers.
