Tailgate question

Ok everyone I have a question. I want to order a tailgate from CCOT but I have a problem the tailgate says that it will only fit a 75-84 Fj40 I have a 66 and I was wondering if the 66 and 75-84 model Fj40's have the same LxWxH if they are the same then all I should have to do is drill some holes.

It should fit and I say should, because any body work back there may have altered things. It lists for 75-84 because before this time you would have a tailgate set-up from the factory. 75-84 corresponds to the build spec for ambulance doors-no tailgate unless Factory Soft-top. Check out page 133 on SOR.com and then check out page 136. Take a look at the model years for each.

The one you are looking at from CCOT is not really tailgate. By that I mean it doesn't fold down but is used to fill the void when the ambi doors are removed.

Didn't notice you mentioned drilling holes for the tabs.

I believe it should fit the earlier years, but to be on the safe side call in the a.m.

According to SOR they say no,

They don't say if it doesn't fit due to the opening space or the way the tabs are made for the ambi door hinges.

Probably woulnd't hurt to call both if someone doesn't chime in that has actually installed one of these on an earlier rig.

Could someone that has a 75-84 measure the length of there tailgate that is really the only dimension that I am worried about. I would greatly appreciate it and I would be able to order it tonite

41.25"x15" for the opening. Will be interesting to see what the half door space is.

Should find, early stuff is mounted on the later 40 all the time. Just curious why your not trying to replace what your 66 had on it from the factory that would open.

If I could find a 66 tailgate w/o horrible amounts of rust at a decent price I would bye it but at the same time I don't want a 40 that is completely stock. I mean don't get me wrong it would be awesome to have a frame up restored 40 I just don't have that kind of money and the black CCOT tailgate is 97.71 and I think that it will look very good with my black diamond plate

1966 Fj40 Tailgate Specs 41.50 x 1.25 x 15 so I figure that is close enough and if there is to much of a gap i can always put some weatherstrip in between the edges.

I have weatherstripping around mine as well. Another roughly quarter inch compressed on each side.

Fair enough. I guess I'm just spoiled. Never paid more than $100 for a complete tailgate with all the hardware. Last one cost me $40. The same for barn doors. Buy the CCOT gate for now and keep you eyes open, deals can still be found,
