It's certainly a regional thing as far as availability is concerned. I sold my 05 4 cylinder 4x4 extended cab right after thanksgiving overnight on craigslist. Then I had no truck. I had been looking for a double cab shortbed TRD and there were very few to choose from within a few hundred miles that weren't over 20 grand. I wound up buying an 05 double cab TRD off road with 113k for $13,800 from a Toyota dealer about 3 hours from my house. It needed a little bit of work but overall was in way better shape than the other 2 I looked at with lower miles for more money. I still drive the 98 tacoma I bought new that my father now owns every now and then. For a trail truck the older ones are at an advantage just due to their size. I think they are built a little better too. But for all around use the 05-newer trucks are far more comfortable and ride/handle better. The 05-up extended cabs do have opening rear doors also. But they are suicide doors and that large opening allows the cab to flex a bit. So they squeak and rattle on rough roads.
