got this '98 tacoma for a song. the issue? the frame of course; its in the realm of wet cardboard, still rolls down the road fine but its not worthy for trail abuse. the recall? nope- salvage title, so it doesnt apply. its got the four cylinder and an auto trans with just under 200k on them.

so what do i do?

a. ive been thinking about taking the cab/bed off and piecing together a new frame from some steel that i can dig up.
a1. keep the truck (got a bj42 what do i need this thing for? (maybe going faster than 40mph)).
a2. sell or trade the damn thing for an old military trailer and build that up for expeditions w/ a RTT.
a3. sell or trade the damn thing and give my bj42 some love (fancy bumper, lights, body work (rust work), the list is endless).

b. since there is a matching topper that came with it, i was thinking about turning it into an off road trailer to tow behind my bj42. (I've spent too much time lurking in the trailer section of mud). put a pull out drawer in the bed, water and fuel reservoirs, tools and spare parts, maybe an RTT if all that takes up too much room under the topper.
b1. so what the heck would i do with the cab and engine?
b2. i want the trailer axel to match the one on my bj42 (spare parts built into the trailer), which would mean hunting down a full floater (doubt thats easy)

anyway, give me your ten cents if you want, we'll see where this thing ends up.

Swap the 4wd parts over to a Prerunner and make a truggy or something. Or just the tranny and transfercase to a Prerunner and put a straight axle.

Part it out, save the bed for a trailer and sell everything else. If you have the time, and space to store parts of course...

Can you get in on the frame recall? If so you might make out really well $ wise.

Think he said it had a salvage title which may knock him out of it.

so i ended up taking the box and topper off of the frame to keep for the trailer, sold the rest to a friend who loves toyotas for a plow truck. so the next step is making a frame for the trailer and starting a thread in the trailer tech sect. cheers
