I've been searching all over hell and back trying to figure out if its possible to get the tcase from behind an A340F out of a 3.4l T100 (aka ~95-98) and get it to bolt up to the auto A340F out of a 3.4l 3rd Gen 4Runner. Basically I'm trying to swap a 3rd gen 4runner to a passenger side front output case, but stay as stock as possible by using the chain case and not have to get an adapter and not have to go to the gear case.

From the info I've gathered around the nets the past week or so I've been searching, the answers I've found are:

a) it will just bolt up (i'm skeptical); or
b) you can swap the tail-housing from the A340F auto from the 3.4l t100 over to the A340F auto from the 3.4l 4runner and then the t100 case will bolt right up; or
c) not possible. you have to swap the 3.4l t100 A340F tranny with the tcase

So, what say ye? Whats the real answer? And anybody have any pics or schematics of these that could help me (and I'm sure plenty of others out there) understand more clearly?

Yes, You will need the tailshaft Housing and the splined coupling from the T100 to swap the forward shift tcase.
I swapped my T100 t case, to a top shift tcase from a 93 4Runner 5 spd, so I can add a crawl box one day.

I still have the Stock righty, T100 foward shift tcase if You need it.

That's a great T100 you've got there. I'd actually found and read through your build a couple times already last week... :D

Seems like you've got a bit of good info, however, what year is your T100?--You mention you swapped with a '93 4runner--did you use a tcase adapter of some sort (marlin, inchworm...)? Did you have to swap out the shift rails at all?

The 93 4runner (2nd Gen) has a totally different xfer case than the 3rd Gen 4Runner, though they both have offerings of the A340F auto. Also, the T100 changed engines tranny/tcase setups slightly in ~95. From what I have gathered, for the T100, Toyota moved from the 3.0L V6 and a gear tcase to the 3.4L V6 and moved from the gear driven transfer case to the chain driven tcase. So the pre ~'95 V6/auto (5VZ/A340F) 4wd T100 drivetrain is more similar with the 2nd Gen V6/auto (3VZ/A340F) 4wd 4Runner and the '95+ V6/auto (5VZ/A340F) 4wd T100 is more similar with the 3rd Gen V6/auto (5VZ/A340F) 4runner and the V6/auto (5VZ/A340F) Tacoma. I'm sure there's more to this that I'm leaving out, forgetting, or don't know yet though....

I found this thread on Toyota Trail Riders where a guy SASd his tacoma and used a t100 case...he mentions issues with the shift rails (T100 forward shift vs. Taco top-shift), the coupling and of course the tail housing. However, he mentions at one point that he may have to use the t100 tranny to get it all to work. But, I couldn't figure out exactly what he ended up doing, so I've posted up there looking for an answer as well. If he did have to swap trannies, my next problem is that one of the posts I read somewhere (ttora perhaps?) seemed to indicate that the A340F in the 3rd Gen 4Runner was different than the A340F in the Tacoma and that the T100 case would actually work behind the A340F in the 3rd Gen 4Runner, but _not_ behind the A340F in the Tacoma.

A few searches on car-part.com using various years 4wd/AT 3rd Gen 4Runners and 4wd/AT 1st Gen Tacomas seemed to indicate the tranny and t-case could _not_ swap between the two, so that seems to indicate there are some differences between the Taco A340F and the 3rd Gen A340F....? I was actually thinking they would be the interchangeable...anybody know the difference(s)?

Any light anybody could care to shed on this topic would be GREATLY appreciated...

BTW, I appreciate the info so far though Joe and anything further you can explain that can help me understand or figure out this all would be greatly appreciated!

Ok. So now I just found this post on TTORA that i believe to be the same guy as in that earlier thread, but in this post he indicated the tranny/tcase combo he used was from behind a 3.0...

So I'm back to believing that the key to this working still hinges on the 3.4L versions...

And a side note that I've just thought about...the T100 case that guy has pics of is CLEARLY a chain driven case. From behind the 3.0... Joe, is yours that is pictured above also a chain driven? Maybe the only that changed in the T100 between years is the engine (from 3.0 to 3.4) and they kept the same auto and tcase?--I did see a thread where somebody said that, but it just seemed off... Man I can't wait til this is all figured out. :P :D

i'm doing this exact swap right now...haven't started my build thread yet b/c i forgot my camera cable at my appartment at college... i just got the whole transmission and tcase out of a 3.4L equipped t-100 and i'm putting it in my 4runner...

here are the difficulties i've found, first, which transmission/tcase do you have right now, mine is a limited with the shift on the fly a340f aka 30-40LE...

- 1st issue, with the shift on the fly the auto transfer case only has one pushrod for hi to low, the 2wd to 4wd is done by the actuator, this is located in the rear shifter position. the t100 manual shift tcase has 2 push rods for both functions, hi-lo and 2-4wd, both are still controlled by one stick from the factory but the problem is this is located in the forward shifter position (this is shown in the pictures above), this wouldn't work for me without mangling up the floorboards so i took my shifter out of the auto and did a lot of custom fabing too it....clocked it around 75 degrees so it'll come up in the right spot, then i had to flatten the sides of the ball so it'll engage one rod at a time, and also had to make the end ball slightly smaller to fit inside the detentes.

-2nd issue, the t100 cross member is in a different location... approximately 7" further back than the 4runner

-3rd issue, not a biggy but the cat needs to be relocated and have the exhaust routed around the transfer case.

I'm still in the middle of this build...actually in the garage right now taking a break...if i come up with any other issues i'll let you know. i'll post some pics when i get them

Very cool. Any chance you are separating the T100 tranny/tcase combo at all? I'd still love to know if the bolt pattern is the same (or perhaps close to) as the combo out of the 4runner.

And I'm assuming your 4Runner is a 1998 model year right? (from your username).

What is your ultimate plan for the front axle etc etc?

Pics would be sweet.

I am putting a lc 80 front axle in with factory elocker. for the time being i'm keeping it radius arms just so i have the truck back for this winter to wheel in the snow (and commute since my daily driver is a miata which isn't too good in the white stuff). I'm running 36 hummer goodyear wrangler rt II's and i'm planning on regearing to 4.88. i've been running 4.30's factory in my stock set up with the 36's and it isn't too bad. so i can't see going all the way to 5.38 or whatever some other guys do. plus it'll be on the highway a good bit. i have a bunch of pictures on my camera but i forgot my camera cable at my appartment...doohhhhh..

I'm not planning on taking the cases apart at all. the bolt pattern does look the same or very similar but one difference there is definitely is the bolt diameter on the t100 case is larger. dont have my calibers to measure it thought since i'm at my friends house using his lift (and for some reason my buddy doesn't have his either) the heads on the 4runner case are 12mm and the heads on the t100 case are 14mm.

The 80 series front with radius arms is what I'll be doing on mine as well. Only it will be permanent for me. Its exactly what I'm looking for. I'll be excited to see and hear more of how yours turns out. (In case you haven't seen it, some of this might be useful info, though its not the same chassis, The Plan.

Interesting info about the bolts on the tcases.

I have a build thread going on rightcoast4x4 but seeing as how you're on the left coast i wouldn't expect you to be on there lol. I'm going to have my buddy start a thread on pirate or here or both for the build tomorrow. its going pretty smooth so far. i've only made a temporary cross member for the trans. its definitely rigged but it works so i can get the axle in. the width on the fj80 radius arms is like 33" or so and the frame inside dimension is 35" on the 4runner so the brackets have to go inside the frame a decent bit. i'm using a 7" wide plate from the outside edge of frame to the inside edge of my brackets.

here are a couple teaser pics for ya
