My coiusin just picked up a 1985 4runner for a screaming deal. It already had dual cases that were installed by the PO. It was working fine until today when he was pulling out of the bank, heard a pop, and no go. there is absolutly no power to the drive shafts no matter what gear it is shifted into, and there is a slight grinding sound like it is not quite shifted in or something. We cruiser guys and don't have a lot of experince with the mini stuff. We are going to moab next week and hope we can figure this out before then. Any help would be very much appreciated!!! Help!!!!

pull your shifter and see if the fork is out of place or its in the case

We pulled both shifters off. They are both shifting normal. The front case spins but the rear does not. Could their be something wrong with the adapter or the splines on one of the shafts? I guess we are going to pull the rear case off and have a look. Any ideas? Also we found a transfer case for sale that is a 1981 off a L50. Would this case work as a replacement?

It is not uncommon for the output shaft of the front transfer case to twist off inside the second case input gear.

If you put the rear case into 4x4 and into high or low gear and both front and rear outputs rotate, then I would suspect the output shaft of the first crawler box.

Drop the drive shafts at the rear transfer case and see what is going on when you rotate the output flanges.

:meh:

So we pulled the cases apart. The output shaft in the first case is stripped, and the splines on the input shaft are not completely stripped, but look really bad. is this a common problem? If so what can we do to prevent it in the future? We have located one transfer case and we are looking at another tonight. Are the parts available to fix the cases with stripped splines? Is it hard to swap out the shafts?

sounds like the adapter bearing went bad.
go marlin crawler dual adapter.

the total spline input gears are stronger he sells those too.
or go 4.7 gears in the rear case.

while you have the rear case apart you may wish to think about a dual shifter kit. you need to leave the center interlock pin out.

I have pictures and intall instuctions.
I really like the twin shifters and the low 2 wheel drive, our trails are really tight

good luck.

Well, I fount out some info if anyone would like to know this...
The adapter that we have is an Advance Adapter. I talked to them today. The coupler is totally stripped out. I don't know how it got to that point or what happened, but it is done. Advance's earlier models were a single bearing in the middle of the adapter, the newer ones are a double bearing, one on each side of the adapter. They sell the parts for the new models, but not the single bearing models. Ours just happens to be the single bearing model, so we are screwed. Our only option is to buy a whole new adapter from what I gather. the parts were going to be around $150, and the whole adapter is only $275. So I guess we can upgrade to a 23 spline while we are at it.
Is the Marlin adapter a better way to go?
