Just a little tidbit: if you don't use the winch frequently, steel cable has it's advantages over synthetic rope in terms of durability, particularly with the AZ sun. If you want synthetic rope, get a cover for the winch to keep sunlight away from the rope.

With my rig weighing in at over 6000lbs., any weight savings incurred from going to synthetic rope won't make much of an impact. And I'd probably end up carrying the steel cable anyway, as extension...

Would you still have same concerns if the vehicle with the synthetic rope is covered unless on the road/trail?

Well, from what I understand, UV light is bad for the rope material; and while 'heat aging' of the synthetic rope material has been described, the regular AZ summer heat probably won't make much of an impact. So: no.

I would switch to synthetic rope if I were to run more of the harder trails where winching is a normal means of completing the trail. I'd like to have the safety features of synthetic rope available, and would look at it more as a consumable that you just have to replace, sorta like tires.
For my current trail usage, where winching has been the exception (but it was good to have the winch available) rather than the norm, it hasn't been too much of a bother to weigh the cable down and tell everybody to get lost and not stand close to the cable. And 'sides that, I just try not to kink the cable.
