I actually thought of it and also purchased one of those out at my local junkyard. After thinking about it for awhile I decided not to go on with the idea. I would hat to drill anymore holes on the body that will probably start cancer of even more rust. I think that one that swings out fron the bumper would be a way better idea. My .02 cents.

THE NISSAN CARRIERS ( caps) had plates on the inside of the 1/4's for reinforcement.
i had thought about doing that with mine, but i think it was easier to build a bumper for it. ;)

Mr FJ60 - I agree but $9.00 vs. $900.00 is worth considering.

Jim - This was attached to a couple nuts welded inside the body panel. No other support which struck me as strange.

If you were able to create a solid mount to the tailgate that locked everything into place and resisted any movement I would give it my stamp of aproval. For up to a 33" tire.

It does have the latch mechanism that bolts directly to the tailgate. I have 31" and am tired of using the mount under as a buffer against the trail. :frown:

The only part I'm leery of is the bottom pivot which doesn't fit quite so nicely. There's about a 1/4 inch gap by the lowermost mounting hole. I thought a rubber space would work...

It would be a bit higher than in the pic

I had a Kaymar for my 40 attached to the rear quarters like that. If I had it all over again, I would NEVER put anything like that on my vehicles again. Even with reinforced metal on the inside, it was very taxing on the rear end and eventually would lead to rust that you will never be able to stop. Mine was even made for this type of setup, even vehicle specific but was a horrible design and panels just cant take weight like that, especially hitting bump and potholes on the road. I would cringe with every one I hit. A bumper mount setup can be done for way under 900, and in the end would make you way happier IMOP. Just my two pesos.

Where did yo ugat $900 from? You can get one made for alot cheaper.

These have been discussed b/f. They wont work unless you reinforce the sheetmetal. And then some of them will work. There was one that I saw that was bumper wounted I think it worked without having to brace anything.

The $900 worked well with the $9.00

Reinforcing it wouldn't be hard and the one you mention is probably 2badfj's .

However, I just happened to pull up next to a bronco with one and drove alonside for a while - I'm passing on the idea. It's far too shaky and noisy to work for me.

good thinking to pass on it. You WONT regret it.

One way you could use that is since is mounts on the side of the cruiser... it'll take a little extra metal. Take and bring a piece of metal up the side of the cruiser and mount the tire carrier to the piece of metal. Then you would wrap it under the body and attach it to the frame, either welding it or making a bracket to attach it to the frame. Does this make sense?

I use the back of the cruiser a lot, and can't stand the opening and closing with the tire in the way. This is the only thing I HATED about my 40.

Since a big tire won't fit under, I am left with a roof racked spare if I go bigger, or if I add a extended range tank. The roof rack would be in the way of the rooftop tent and/or canoe.

Any body figure a way around this problem, I'd love to hear it.

ARRRGH! What about the drawer system and dog boxes? Sorry that works for some, but not me.

I have considered the front bumper mount (too heavy?) and the on the hood mount (ala Land Rover Series). Can't get too enthusiastic about either of these options, either.

I am considering an extended roof rack with the spare forward of the tent. Have to do some measuring, tho'.

I'm glad you came to your senses. Your 62 looks much to clean for a booty fab set up like that.

Yeah, overall it's very clean with the exception of the back end which is pretty dinged up, badly scratched, dented. A swing out could improve the looks considerably but not the way I mentioned above. Gotta find an affordable swing out...
