I have been trying for a few years to kill my carby 3F auto FJ73 so I can do a rebuild/engine conversion with more power.
It is pretty much nuke proof. I haven't been able to break it yet!
I worked in full size troopys in the past, the only real issue I had was they all seemed to have rust in the roof gutters, and accessing equipment in the "cargo bay" was pretty hard when standing on the ground and accessing through the rear doors.
Wrecked many guys backs. (well built hardened guys...)
FRP top on the J73 doesn't rust. It is strong as f**k and is easy to mount roof equip by including the roll bar inside the cab in your mounting solution.
One thing to keep in mind, the steering seems to have a dead-zone at 12 o'clock, and often I find myself concentrating very hard on micro adjustments of the steering wheel especially at speed. After a 2+ hour trip, I definitely feel more tired and needing a break.
I think the steering box worm drive gear may need looking at after 40 years!
1HZ variants sell for high prices, sometimes ridiculously more than a petrol model. Like DOUBLE in some versions.
Are there any 1GR-FE powered MWB available in USA?
The 4.0lt V6 with vvti and a manual is an absolute dream. Same as your Tacoma etc.
Huge amount of parts support. I would say even more than 1HZ.
Even as a conversion, the 1GR could be worth looking at.
It is about 166kg (365lb) , the 1HZ is 300kg (660lb).
130hp versus 270hp.
Almost half the weight and twice the power....
the 1FZfe is also a contender. Seems a bit simpler and likely will outlast a 1GR. with both options though, ECU's and electrical components may have a reduction of reliability in extreme arduous conditions. Especially if no maintenance is undertaken.
1HZ will run on sh!t diesel, recycled sump oil, 2x wires and no battery if you want it to.... Apocalypse ready.
