I bought a Right Hand Drive Toyota Proda LandCruiser to deliver mail and had the 2L-TE diesel engine go on me. After spending $5K on trying to get it to work I am taking the suggestion to put a gas engine in it. I have done research and found that the Proda came with a 22RE engine and would mount to the 343 Tran.

A gas engine makes sense being that there is no diesel mech around and diesel is 30% more expensive around here.

I bought a used 22RE and had the EFI removed and replaced with a carburator thereby avoiding the problems with changing electronics. The mech is telling me that because the starter is on the opposite side of the engine from the 2L TE. He questions whether it would connect to the bell housing.

Would this be a problem? The starter is on the engine of the 22R and the starter is on the tranny of the 2LTE.

Just inspect the block of the 22re to see if there is clearance to leave the starter bolted to the bell housing as it was originally. You could also look for pictures on the web of a RJ7* engine bay to see how Toyota did it.

I think more of concern is how are you going to run the computer for the A343 transmission? I haven't looked at the schematics, but for some reason I thought the transmission was controlled by the 2lte computer.
