Hi all,
I am looking for advice on what needs to be replaced to achieve a better street ride. I have 250 K miles on my 2003 100 series. I recently replaced the shocks with Bilstein HD's and upgraded to larger Whiteline sway bars. While I get off the pavement a good bit on job sites (nothing extreme) I spend most of my driving time covering long distances in the twisties. These upgrades did nothing for what I now think is worn out (other) suspension parts. I'm getting tons of bump steer and chassis shimmy on rough pavement and expansion joints in curves and the truck still feels unstable at highway speeds especially If I would need to do a tricky evasive move.

Can anyone advise me on what needs replacement? Torsion bars? Other bushing packages? Springs? At this mileage I am not looking for a plush ride just want stability and safety. It's in great shape otherwise and I'm willing to spend the bucks to keep it on the road for another 10 years.
Thanks in advance.

Here a couple of ideas. I know from experience (but not on a Land Cruiser), that stiffer shocks and sway bars can stress other suspension parts and point out weak/worn stuff. You're on the right track thinking about other things that now seem extra floppy. Threads in the forum FAQs indicate you might look at ball joints and suspension bushings first. Again, with no direct experience, I'm going to guess the stiffer front sway bar is contributing to the bump steer. Other with direct experience will have to help you solve the bump steer.

You're getting bump steer because your front suspension height is too high and/or not enough caster (and/or worn rear control arm bushings...see below).

If you don't have a heavy aftermarket front bumper and winch...then go back to the OEM t-bars for more compliant ride & lower spring rate.

If you have not replaced the rear upper and lower control arm bushings yet...at 250k miles they are shot. Replace with OEM bushing arms. Worn rear UCA bushings will give wild "torque" steer effect especially under WOT.

Thanks for the input all. The truck is stock except for the stiffer Bilsteins and Whiteline bars. I am not sure about the tire question but will check it out and make sure the pressures are not too high. Thanks especially Spressoman for calling out those bushings...seems like the right next step before I go large with torsion bars and new springs. It make take a little while but I will report back as I make the changes.
Best,
Charles.
