So here is where I am. I did bearings and brakes last week on my 2000 LC. No issues, everything rolling good, hubs not hot at all.

Last night I replaced the shocks. Used new lower bolts. Everything is adjusted to correct FSM torque values.

So when I put the shocks on, I see that my inner CV boot is torn and badly leaking on driver's side. Lots of chocolate milk grease all over, but never made a chirp or a click. Annoying, but that's life.

BUT - I take the car on a test drive after putting on the shocks. Everything good for a mile or two. Then the right front sounds like someone is rattling dimes in a tin cup, and occasionally throwing one against the inside of the wheel well. It is rhythmic, it's all the time, and increases and decreases with forward motion, so it's definitely something in the driveline. The sound actually seems to get a little quieter when turning, but that could be because I was going slower in the turns.

I checked everything, twice. Nothing loose. Nothing rubbing. Brake bits all in their correct places.

I think the inner CV joint grenaded itself, perhaps? But the sound is happening when driving straight.

Any opinions/ideas are appreciated!

Thanks!

If its run low in grease its going to be noisey. It sometimes sounds like someone is banging on the footwell under your feet as the axle slides back & forth inside the tulip since there's no grease to cushion the travel.

^that. Perfect, thanks!

Ordered a replacement axle this morning, not pulling one of indeterminate age without replacing it. If this one is OEM, will get this one rebuilt and save it as a spare.

s***. I think I have this same problem. I feel that click/ creek under driver side floor board when taking off from a stop. I thought I had a damaged body mount, but it's probably just that torn driver side CV!

If it does it just once when you start, my first guess is the drive flange splines are worn. Mine were worn way down when I changed them. If it's "click click click", could be CV joint, from info above. Wheel bearings, spindle bushing can make noise, but you'd hear them all the time, I think.
