Does anybody carry surfboards or SUPs on expo style roof racks? I’ve always run Yakima bars on cruisers and they work well for carrying lumber and surfboards. I’m wondering if an expo style rack would work or if the rocker on the surfboard wouldn’t work with a flatter style rack.

Yup. Kayaks, surfboards, ladders, lumber etc.

I’m wondering if the longer length of a 200 series rack would interfere more with surfboard rocker than your 40 series? Like for a longboard or SUP

The reason I don’t have an expo rack is that it doesn’t work well IMO for kayaks and long boards. They are better supported by cross bars.

Some of the expo racks like the Gobi, have cross bars built in or adjustable... you can put an aftermarket carrier like Thule or Yakima makes on to those bars, the height of the carriers will compensate for any rocker in the boards... same case for the Front Runner racks as well. I ran Gobi on my 4Runners and never had a problem same case with the LC and the Front Runner. BTW, the Front Runner rack is really quiet on the LC. can't say that for the Gobi on the 4Runner... Note: if you order an expo rack and want to carry boards, SUP, etc. make sure the rack is flat... if you have a luggage carrier or lip in the front or back, it may interfere with the boards...

I ended up getting Yakima crossbars and I’m thinking of getting the Yakima showdown sup carrier. Looks pretty nifty because it allows you to load boards on the side of the truck and then swing them up on top. Anybody used one?

Seemed like the right place to ask y'all - has anyone gone with either the Thule SUP Taxi XT or Yakima SUP dawg? Or did you go wuth something different and why?

Thanks!

Thanks! interesting - do you own, have you used one?

Dont have that mount because I dont surf, but I do have their rack and some other mounts including their canoe mount. They are all solid so far.

Got it, thanks - really need first hand experience.
It’s ridiculous to vertically mount your surfboard like that. It’s like a taxi billboard.
Wouldn't be my first choice - any feed back you can share? One thing about the Yakima is that it's flat design "looks" like straps could be modded w foam so as to also carry sno skis

Check out @kook_of_the_day on insta for some ideas on how not to carry a surfboard.

You probably didn't even read thru the product page, but it has 2 positions it can be in. Vertical to free up space for other gear on the rack. If you have a rack full of cargo and the board on the side next to it that is much different than having your board vertical for no reason. Also has horizontal and can hold 2-3 boards.

Ha! Know it well, kookslams is a fav and I have often come close to being a postee :)

I did see that; the $1k price tag on the rack was a bit of a downer (but, it looks to be worth it). My need is just to find a simple way to transport boards from one place to another (and not end up on a "don't be THAT guy" site). If the design was such I could also pop a pair of skies up there hat would be awesome - it also has to be really, really corrosion resistant as it will be subjected to a pretty salty environment.

Appreciate the feedback!

I’ve carried paddleboards on my LCs with no problem. Just put pads on there.

How thick a pad are you using? When I moved my Dakine "tube" pads from my 100 to the 200, all fit fine, BUT when I raised the rear hatch the air dam/spoiler/tail hit the board - and on bumps, smacked the nav shark fin.

Excellent 40, btw, and your backyard looks awesome!
