Surface wipe down

I have prep'd my 40's exterior by using aircraft paint remover and then a DA sander to smooth it all out. I am getting ready to spray it with a HVLP gun and need to know what I use to wipe down the bare metal before I spray it w/ primer so that I know all the dust is removed and it leaves a clean and dry surface to adhere to? Mineral spirits?

I usually wipe the surface down with whatever is recommended as a paint thinner for whatever particular paint I'm using. This allows for less adhesion problems from left over residue.

Paint thinner is not an acceptable product for this purpose. Leads to problems with the paint job. You need prepsol, an autobody paint shop product, that removes grease and dirt. As far as dust and residue, you need tack cloth. Both items are available at your local autobody paint store.

I didn't know that. I've been wiping everything with acetone or xylene.

DX 330 is a grease and oil remover. You want the contaminants off in order to get proper adhesion and wipe it again and again. The gallon is cheap but alligatored paint is not cheap.

Is the DX330 available at places like Napa or will I have to go to a autobody shop?

DX 330 is from PPG and I buy it from a auto paint shop. It is not that much $$. I'm sure NAPA would carry a grease and oil remover, but you need to wipe it multiple times in order to assure yourself of a clean surface. To further clarify this, you need a wet hand and a dry hand. Wipe with one and dry it the other. Clear as mud?

Exactumundo, you want one wet towel in one hand, one dry towel in the other. Immediately follow the wet one with the dry one while the surface is still wet. Oh, and use lint free wipers of course. Any autobody paint place be it napa, your dupont dealer, or whatever, will have a prep product. DX, Prepsol, etc. are all just different brands of the same basic thing.

Ok, I'll run by Napa and see what they have. I bought some acetone a week ago thinking that will work but I'd rather get the right stuff after ALL this work I've put into stripping the metal down to the bare metal.

In a pinch.....I have used MEK. It burns off real quickly
