Like the famous FoodTV show, the Sand Chef competition puts* La Creme de la Creme of Cruiser Chefs to compete against each other.
The competition will take place Friday evening at Surf & Turf.*Participants have 90 minutes to come up with 2 savory dishes, plus one desert bases on a secret ingredient. The secret ingredient will be revealed the Friday morning. This will give enough time for participants to get their ingredients and recipes ready for the evenings showdown.

There will be a panel of 5 judges. Two males and two females, plus the event's organizer: PismoJim.
Each entry will be judged in 2 categories in a scale of 1 to 10. The categories are: Taste & originality. The wining team will be the one who is able to score the most amount of points.

Each team will have it's own name and maximun of 3 members. Each team must provide all their ingredients, including the secret ingredient, plus all their cooking equipment. Each team will bring their own setup (Cooking table, stove, grill, cookware, ETC). There will be a $20 fee per each team. All teams must sign up by Oct. 20th and fees are due on on the morning of the event. The wining team gets to keep 100% of the signup fees. In the event of a draw, the prize will be divided evenly between the wining teams.

If you are interested in competing, please PM with your team's name and members.
If you are interested in being a judge, will have a sign up sheet Friday morning as the secret ingredient is revealed. Judges will be randomly selected.

Team will be advised Friday (Nov.3rd) morning what the secret ingredient is. It will be something that can be purchased at any local supermarket.

Teams will only need to make 2 dishes plus dessert in enough quantity for the judges to taste. If they decide to make more, it's ok.

Great idea Alvaro!

BAM !!!..............................Kick it up a notch!

One thing though!! You already know what the secret ingredient is so you have 1 month and a hlf to prepare your recipes......

This would be fun to watch! I love watching Iron Chef.. You'll have to get an anouncer as funny as those guys...

ARe there cooking equip. restrictions?, dutch ovens ect. V. motor home euip.?

There's no restrictions as far as equipment. However, everything must be made from scratch and in a general cooking area. We wouldn't want people wondering off to their motor homes and coming back with food. Dutch Ovens are OK. But remember, you've got 90 minutes to complete your dishes.

Are all the Chefs going to be in the middle of camp? I think it would be more fun that way. Plus there could be some great taunting! :D

That's the idea. A general cooking area for all.

Just to clarify:
All three dishes must be made with the secret ingredient. Two savory and a dessert. Dishes will be judged on taste and originality.

Also, it would be a good idea to come prepared with your favorite cookbook(s), so you have recipes that include the secret ingredient.

phew...you're not judging on plating...

no need to haul in the fancy china :D

90 minutes to complete..check.
what about marinades or rubs? can we bring them and use our own special blend?

If we are told Friday morning, can we race to the store, and start the marinades as soon as we purchase the "mystery item" or is it to stay refridgerated until we all start at the same time?

Are all cooking utensils supposed to be present at the time of finding out the special ingredient, or are we allowed to purchase things after finding out?

AWESOME IDEA!!!
I wanna judge if I'm not cooking in it...
is it limited, or camp wide contest?

Pablo,

Come prepared. I was just watching Iron Chef America and Bobby Flay has a stash of sauces ready to go for whatever is thrown at him. Having rubs and marinades ready are part of the game. Bring them from home, no problem.

You should have your cooking utensils ready by the time the competition starts. If you feel you need to buy something for the secret ingredient, go right ahead. You have until the evening to get ready.

Having said this, you must NOT include any sauce, rub, marinade or anything that includes the secret ingredient.

Good Eatings

Alvaro

please don't pick ketchup, pepper, garlic or salt as the "secret" okay?

so a four hour marinade is legal according to the rules?

What are the limits of purchases? $$$ value, etc?

Can someone just buy a cheesecake and add something to it and call it dessert? or does it have to be completely made at camp?

Is wagering allowed?

Pablo,

You can buy a cheese cake and use it for dessert. Just as long as the cheese cake is not dessert, but an ingredient in your dessert. For example, if the secret ingredient was strawberries and you made cheese cake filled strawberries, then it would be OK to use a cheese cake.

Does that makes sense?

Remember there are a total of 10 points for originality. Originality means how clever where you using the secret ingredient on the dish.

Don't worry ketchup, pepper, garlic or salt won't be the secret ingredient.

Wagering is not part of the competition.

Alvaro
