Hello to all. I've been wanting a little more power and noise out of my 1hz so I pondered on the idea of a turbo or Supercharger.
At the moment there is a SC14 supercharger on the net to suit a 1HZ, and it includes everything needed apart from the hoses. I'm hoping to pay around $250 aussie dollars for it. This SC bolts onto where the air-con pump goes and uses the air-con crank pulley. I don't have an air-con pump on the engine at the moment and seeing as how I am heading into winter there is no need for one.
I have never really wanted to add a Turbo or SC to a 1hz but I thought that I could leave the set-up stock and provide minimal boost to minimise engine damage. And all for only $250.
I'm just after a few opinions to work out if this is a good idea or if I should just leave the engine alone and be happy with it. Thanks for any info

I would really not recommend the SC14 for the 1HZ. The Toyota roots blowers create a lot of heat, and use a lot of crank hp to turn them. Not only that, but I don't think it'll move enough air for a 1HZ (a fellow on the surf forums put one a 2.4l, which is more suitable displacement). Finally, the advantage of a roots charger is to provide low rpm torque with no lag. What you probably want for your 1HZ is mid range power for highway cruising. A turbo is really the only way to go. Turbo's are much more efficient also; your fuel economy will be better. Save for a turbo (even just the setup off the 1HDT).

Just my two cents.

You could always intercool it and add a smaller pulley to help pull a bit more out of it. But yes they are kinda limited in terms of mid and high end push. Tuned right, it might kick it in the pants well down low, but the effects would dissipate higher in the rev range.
Do whatever you want, really. I know some of my hair brained schemes and modifications raise an eyebrow sometimes. But i just dont care. Lol. And do it anyway.

:pMate, I've put one of these on my 1HZ and absolutely love it.

Everyone goes on about them being cheap chinese crap, which is probably true, but it's cheap, runs great and if I change my engine oil and filter at 5000k's like I do it will still last a couple of years. Then I'll be in a position to get a flash one.

You don't have to go mad with money to make quite a bit of difference. There are some great upgrades available for free just built into your injection pump.

Here's a good place to start:

As Yotahed said, do it anyway :p you'll find plenty of rich elitists on the forums, but sprinkled inbetween is plenty of crew who love their 1HZ's just as much but don't see the box...

Do the chinese turbo like dadinabarrel and yotahed say. Price is right.

Only reason I was crapping on the Toyota SC14, is I used to have a SC12 on a japanese 4AGZE. It moved barely enough air for the 1.6l gasoline engine. SC14 is only 16% bigger, so I couldn't see it working on a 4.2l engine (even diesel). The SC14 is an 'upgrade' for the 1.6l engine. You can do the math though. I think I have compressor maps for the SC12 and SC14 if you want.

You could find a more suitable and larger Eaton supercharger probably cheaper than the toyota lump if you really want a roots charger.
