I don't think its grease - its a rubber / plastic. New cables are exactly the same.

Well, I reckon I will probably just order cables then. There's white lithium grease in the place the motor connects to the cables, and in there the cable was bare, so I figured it was hardened grease.

I saw some of the prices quoted for cables here, but they're only 150 or so on ebay. Probably money well spent considering the ease of access for servicing.
 
I wonder if you can find some poly or teflon tubing with the right size diameter to act as a new jacket and slip those cables in.
that's precisely what I am going to try, because while the tubes ARE 150 on ebay, the cables are 400 and up. Going to try to recreate the low friction sleeve.
 
It's hard to tell from the pics, so sorry if it's a dumb question, but is it possible to lube the cables without disassembly if my sunroof is still functioning?
I came here to ask the same question. Would love to do a little PM in order to keep it working!
