Can anyone recommend a decent quality brand of sunglasses and where to buy?

Thanks to new technology, for the first time in many years, I've been able to go back to contact lenses and not have to wear glasses. Now I can go back to wearing sunglasses :).

I used to wear Bolle' back when and I liked those alot. Any thoughts?

The two best over the counter brands are - Drum roll.....Maui Jim or Serengeti

Anyone have any dealings with Cosco prescription sunglasses? I'm tired of buying cheap frames.

For the money Bolle were good back in the day - not much to go wrong with their frames as they were Acrylux, very durable, decent polycarbonate lenses, offered polarization, etc, etc. I have nothing bad to say about Bolle pre 2002.
NOW is a bit different - Bolle was victim of outsourcing and brand acquisitions/ consolidations, and the new vendors (Bushnell) do not own the patents that made the lenses so popular back then...I am not a fan today.

Now what Phil said; because I bored him excessively camping last month is true...I believe for the money the best lenses for your eyes are Maui Jim and Serengeti. The funny thing is that Serengeti is now owned by (Bushnell) also, but still makes their lenses in the Bernini factory in Italy that has been manufacturing their lenses since 1972 since Corning optics was discontinued (Serengeti's Inventor). They also use the same Photochromic glass lenses that they always have...very rare these days’ due to impact resistance regulations of ANSI 787.1+.
Maui Jim offers lots of models, from glass lenses like the Serengeti’s; to high impact polycarbonate models all the way from 150.00, which based on their Calvin scale of clarity vs. optical enhancement to color to relief, etc, etc, is a great value.
The one diamond from Maui Jim, is that they only make polarized lenses...Very important for glare reduction and eye relief from long term usage / bright sun, etc. A bit of a pain if you are reading LED’s, or a display, however the benefit vastly outweighs the negative.

Lastly, because I already know this is dragging is Oakley, whom I worked for for 10 years…great sport frames, best warranty in the market, and pricing from $90.00 for non polarized – I recommend if you are going to possibly be in a situation where you need eye protection like Sean said with the safety glasses, as all models Oakley make are out of super strong polycarbonate called plutonite, which is equivalent to wearing a bullet proof vest in front of your eyes in the case of flying debris. Hands down the strongest optical material by 10.

sams club has the safty glasses for 35 you get 12 and they use a 12ga round to test them .

Sean, I got a box of Oakley lenses that I have personally shot in the lab with 12 Gauge, leadshot @ 15-20'. Lots of fun, great for the military buyers to see when the big safety contracts were being decided. Show a video of it like i put below is great for the buyers, but to take off the glass that I was wearing, walk a few feet away and put it on a maniken and pull a sawed off 12 gauge from under the counter and pump a few rounds into it....the looks from the army guys was priceless! Very few contracts did not go to Oakley from 1997-2005!!!

That is awesome information - just what I was hoping for and more. Sounds like Im going to Costco and start with checking out the Serengetis. It's great that there is such a great pool of information in this club.

Josh, you deal anymore?

(sunglasses that is) :grinpimp:

Any experience with Julbo? I'm looking for something bullet proof, polarized and with a Rx prescription.

Kinda like these two models:

Edit:

Nevermind....Frames are only $45 & $60 respectively, But after you add up the lense options, $474 plus change..Yikes!

Murf, if you know anyone that is active/retired military or LE that you're good friends with they can get you a discount on Oakley's. That's how I get all of mine, minus my prescription Oakley's.

I like my Arnette's... I like the style and their supposed to be pretty good glasses / lenses. I got mine at Sunglass Hut. There was a defect in the lenses (thin horizontal line formed on one of the lenses after about 2 months) they replaced them no questions asked.

I also have a pair of Maui Jim's. At over $230 (I got a gift certificate once for my birthday) and they arr great too, I just wish the style was more "cool"

I like my Wiley X's. They fit my (goofy-shaped) head. Don't discount fit. I tried on dozens of pairs of "highly rated" glasses, and if they don't fit well, it doesn't matter how well they're made, or what they're made of. Ended up getting mine at the Harley shop in Chandler of all places.
