Hi guys - I'm taking the family up to Yellowstone and Glacier in a couple of weeks. Leaving from Colorado Springs. I'd like to get off the freeway a bit along the way - camp away from the commercial parking lots, crowds, etc. a little offroading - nothing to crazy as we'll be travelling solo and the truck needs to get us home! We will likely be pulling an M-416 as well.

Any suggestions for places to see/roads to drive along the way?

Thanks!
Eric

If you go over the Chief Joseph Highway, (Beartooth Highway may not be open by then) there are some nice places to camp outside of Cooke City, most of the trails don't open up till the 4th of July but there are nice places along the clarks fork river. If you go in from Cody WY there are lots of good campgrounds, better chance of seeing bears and wolves going in that way than most of the park roads.

I like going to Glacier using the two lanes through helena then back along the front range, there are som interesting roads back to the freeway that go along the Dearborn river to Wolf Creek MT, If you want more detail PM me your email and I can draw a coupla of maps.

I second Brew8's comments about using the two lane along the front for the Yellowstone to Glacier stretch. There are some great roads and family friendly hikes around Agusta. If you want more information you can PM or call 406-781-8348.

Hey guys - thanks for the input and sorry for not getting back sooner. Trip got delayed due to crazyness at work and delays in my trailer build. But we'll be leaving this Saturday morning for sure - paint should even be dry by then! Checking out your recommendations now...

What do you guys think of this route?

Is that what you mean by the "two lane through Helena"?

I'm in Helena if you want to stop by.

Coming down thru Seeley Lake, you'll need to watch for deer.

Not sure if you've been thru Flaming Gorge in WY

What do you guys think of this Heart Butte Rd./Heart Butte Cuttoff from Dupuyer on 89 to just S. of East Glacier Park Village on HWY 2 as a way to get off the beaten path a bit? Looks like there might be some nice roads into the back a bit there - Hughes Trail, Palookaville Trail, etc.

If you come down through seeley you will be only a couple of miles out of Missoula, I live 40 miles west of Missoula, we can put you up camping in the back yard as we have a big fire pit and are out in the booneys, or let you know of a few places to camp, I have a book of a lot of trails in this area if you want to spend a few days in this area, there are a couple of hot springs within a few miles that have camping and such. there are a few mudders in Missoula also.
never the less, its a great trip,

Missoula is a cool town - been through there twice on cycling trips! Might take you up on that offer (and the rest of you guys as well!), but alot of our planning is going to be on-the-fly. Not really sure how long we'll stay in any place or what detours we might take. Though the route I layed out about may have to be trimmed back a bit if we want to do anything other then driving for two weeks - it's around 2800 miles right now, not counting driving in the parks, etc. So about 200 miles/day.

And last night, for the first time ever, my starter didn't engage - few taps with the hammer and it worked again, but not a good sign :bang: Rebuilding it has been on my todo list, but haven't gotten there yet.

sounds good, let us know if you blow through here, I here ya on trips like that, its a long haul and a lot of fun but you gotta kinda keep on track.
better get that starter fixed.....

If you take the Heart Butte cutoff you will be going by "Dog Gun" lake. It is some of the best fishing I have ever done. You will need a reservation permit and some silver lures. If I recall it is 12 miles from East Glacier.

Is there any camping up there? After a few nights in yellowstone campgrounds, I'm ready for a little more space.

Hey Eric!
Were planning on hitting th road to yellowstone, jackson hole and anything else interesting this weekend. Very similar to your trip description. How did the route you took place?

Anyone in the area care to meet up/wheel and have some fun that would be great!

Heard from a friend that Norris (park, open space, canyon or i forget) is a great place to see by Jackson hole...
