I'm shopping winches for my 1988 FJ62. I'm installing an ARB front bull bar at the same time as the winch. I'm a bit of a novice. Please help me. I dont really know where to start. I'm willing to spend money for a quality winch. Not shopping ebay for off brands.

I'm looking at the WARN 26502 M8000 8000-lb Winch. . . just fyi. Good choice?

From what I understand, that's a pretty good winch all around.

However, the classic choice is an M8274. It has a high amp draw than the M8000, and it's taller and heavier, but while the M8000 is a good, reliable 8k winch, the 8274 seems to be able to handle much larger loads than it's rated for, which is good when you have both axles stuck in two-foot deep packed snow. The 8274 also has a darn good line speed compared to almost any planetary-gear winch (like the M8000).

If you're buying brand new, the 8274 is pretty pricey, though, too. Of course, you can usually find one in good working shape on Craiglist for $400-600, at least around here. At worst, if you're willing to do a little work, you can rebuild one of the $400 ones (or a wonky $300 one) for maybe $300 in parts and have something as reliable as an $1800 brand new 8274.

Sir,
I run both the M8000(new) and 8274(used,rebuilt) on my 40s.
The M8000 was about 800$ new when I bought it . I have about 650$ in the 8274. I would do the rebuild again if I had to choose between the two. I had to reclock the M8000 winch to mount it horizontally on my mount ,:banana:job
Earlier in life when I had hair , I worked the sheet out of a 8274 ,I had on an old cj7 mt. logger/mud jumper P.O.S., before My first L/C. And I mean worked it hard over the course of about 10years . I would not hesitate to work this one that hard now.
I have never used the M8000 except to drag some downed trees that were uprooted.
Both are the about best that a normal person will ever need .

Thanks for this post. It is very helpful. Is there any particular trick to finding and identifying a "good" used 8274? Just luck?

Hi All:

Drew151, be aware that the Warm 8274 vertical winch uses a different model of ARB bull bar then the low-mount Warn M8000.

Both are good winches, but a 10K winch might be a better choice for a heavy rig like a FJ62.

Good luck!

Alan

If it were my rig and I was willing to to buy a premium product, I'd go with the WARN 9.5xp or 9.5xp-s (with synthetic rope). Plenty of grunt, fast speeds, extreme-duty sealing.
