I have been contemplating coating the interior floor of our 85 FJ60 with Durabak. Has anyone done this?

be sure to get it completely rust free first

we used duraback (I think it was duraback) on the inside of our rollout drawer. Has held up very well over the last few years.

Durabak is tough stuff, but it's very rough coating to the touch--make sure that's what you want.

Does anyone know how Durabacking the interior would be as far as the amount of interior noise in the rig. Also does anyone know of a good waterproof flooring system I could put in a cruiser besides bedliner. Sorry for the highjack but I though it was fairly relative question. Thanks in advance.

There are better materials for sound deadening and as a heat shield than Durabak, but yes, it will help with sound somewhat.

is this in conjunction with your factory carpeting or as a replacement? if you are planing on replacing the factory carpeting with a bedliner then it will be considerable noisier and hotter in the cab than the stock carpet setup. the carpets have a insulation barrier behind them that help with heat and noise.
If you are looking for less noise and an end to the wet carpets then i would suggest 2 layers of dynamat extreme or like (less expensive product) with either the carpets reinstalled without the insulation backing or the pvc diamond plate carpet set that I think SOR is selling.
I did the dynamat extreme route and it had a huge difference sound wise and the interior heats up much quicker in the winter. I was going to yank all the carpet and replace with the pvc mat from SOR but Henry (exiled) convinced me that water gets trapped under the mat and acts to casue rust rather than keep things dry.
I also I had durabeked the hole interior of my fj40 but that stuff would take the skin off your knees fast. it cut down on the squeeks and rattles inside the tub but I 'm not sure how much noise it stopped from coming in.

What I am looking for is a waterproof type interior that I can spray out with a hose, also something thaty wouldn't get hurt by going in or underwater (trying to waterproof everything below the dash area). I plan on moving alot of the electrical and using dielectric grease on the connections. I have stripped the crusier to just the shell and am trying to make it rugged and weather-worthy but at the same time making the interior decent (nothing like a cadillac or anything). I might bedline and then put some type of flooring on top, but i'm just looking to see if anyone else has done anything like I want to do. Oh and by the way this is an '83 Cruiser. Thanks Again.

i am curious about this too. i ripped out the carpet in the front of mine because of a leaky windshield gasket. i am considering going back with some type of spray in rather than the carpet. i did not rip the insulation board out yet though as it does help with the heat. i want to spray in somthing that will help with the noise, heat and be water resistent. the insulation board that is glued in traps a lot of water, so if anyone has wet carpet in their rig, the moisture goes a lot further than the carpet and pad.....

I'm glad my original question created so much discussion. I was under the impression that you could get Durabak in different textures. I'm going to try it next weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

You are right. Durabak comes in two textures...regular and smooth. In a perfect world, I'd want the interior done in smooth Durabak and applied with a spray gun.

PM TJDIV, he has LOTS of experience applying Durabak.
