Hello all. I've got a question and wondered if there's any feedback out there. I think that a certain co&$#@!^er where I work has put liquid sugar into my gas tank. Other than really crappy fuel economy, there has been no performance loss. The loss in fuel economy was sudden and not over a period of time. I've used some in tank fuel injector cleaner with some positive results, but am still getting about half the fuel economy that I was before. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?

How many gallons have you gone through since the problem started?

Thanks, got the locking gas cap right away. As far as fuel, 4 or 5 tanks and economy is still crappy. When I use a concentrated injector cleaner, the economy goes back to where it used to be and then the next tank back in the dumpster. I guess I'll drain the tank and flush it next :censor::mad:

I went from 22 mpg to 15 mpg overnight
when I put my light bar hilift shovel, lights, tires ,lift.
I got a big pocketbook shock. did you do any mods during the same time. I've heard if someone puts enough sugar in the tank it will crystalize through out or turn to goo.drain/and flush the tank real good, take the fuel line off at the tank and as close to the engine as you can and blow out the line into a bucket so you can see if something comes out with the fuel. If its all clean then you know its in the engine and I dont have any info for that except tell a mechanic what you have done and go from there.

I've had the bumper, lift, winch etc on for close to a year now and didn't notice much of a decline in fuel economy at all. I recently experienced the brunt of a co-workers road rage when he thought it would be fun to ride my bumper in to work one morning untill I had to hit the brakes to avoid hitting a deer that came out of the ditch in front of me. He didn't see the deer, came within inches of creaming us both out and then spazzed on me for his dumbass stunt. 2 days later, I started getting really bad mileage. Where I work, we use liquid sugar as part of the product we manufacture. It seems it would be easy enough to dump a shot of sugar into the tank. One HD mechanic I talked with suggested that it would gum up the injectors if enough was put in.

Change the fuel filter (if you havn't allready) and start checking all electrical and vacuum conections. Make sure the oil fill cap is on snug. If all still seams OK. Discounect the battery(s) so the CPU resets. If all else fails... have the dealer run a diagnostic check.

Good luck

Do you live where they put ethanol in the gas during the winter time? Maybe that's it. My mileage goes down a good 10% or more at least. I saw an episode on Mythbusters where they showed that sugar doesn't do s*** to an engine.

They did a test on myth busters and they stated that sugar will not hurt the engine.

Yup, just drained everything and changed the fuel filter. didn't notice anything coming out in the fuel, but the filter seemed like it wasn't letting much pass through. I do use an ethanol blended fuel though. I use Mohawk/ Husky fuel because it pays for my BCAA membership over the course of the year. I'll try switching fuels for a while and see if anything improves. It's too soon after the tank flush/ filter change to notice a difference in fuel economy, but it does seem smoother now. Thanks for the input and the best of the season to all.

just a thought:
there was a thread recently (80 section?) where somebody was talking about fuel additives for cleaning and mentioned that some additives will dissolve plastic such as the tank sock leaving goo to plug things up. Something related?

How easy was it to drop the tank and gain access to the "filter"?

It's just a fine screen isn't it?

You might want to change your spark plugs.
They could be gummed up or fowled.
People have claim increase in mpg switching to a better plug like an E3 or iridium plug.
Are you a manager, is this why your coworkers are gunning for you :o

You should put marbles in his gas tank won't hurt anything but sounds amazing when he goes around a turn? Just a thought Good Luck though

OK, if you're that concerned, pay the $300.00 have em drop your tank, flush it, and be done with it!

you may have some sweet gas but sugar in the tank wont hurt nufin.

Check and see if some one put Land Cruiser in your FJ...My 3FE gets 11 mpg...I thought it was sugar but its not. Sorry I am no help.

Did your CEL come on at all? What does the exhaust smell like? If its a little funny hold a piece of white paper up to the tail pipe. A little bit away from it and you can see if there is a lot of crap coming out the back. It can help tell if you are running rich. I would also check your filter and the air inlet to the filter. Sometimes things get stuck up there and can cause your air intake to be harder.
