I've been keeping a log of the strange behavior of my 1HDT. I know it's a lot to read, but if any of you have the patience for it, I would appreciate any new insights.
First Incident: Drove the truck approximately three miles to Fred Meyer. Shopped for about 45 minutes. Started truck, drove for one block to the stop light. As soon as I tried accelerating from the stop light, the engine died. No amount of cranking would restart it. After five minutes of sitting, it fired right up, and I drove off without further incident.
Second Incident: Drove the truck approximately two miles to the bank. Was in bank for approximately 20 minutes. Started up and began to drive off. Engine died immediately after leaving the parking lot and approaching a stop sign. Cranked and cranked but would not start. Waited five minutes, and it fired right up. Drove off without further incident.
Third Incident: Drove approximately 45 minutes on freeway (as with all previous incidents, this was the first drive of the day). Arrived at destination, and vehicle was shut off for approximately one hour. Started up and drove ten blocks and engine died. After a five minute “rest,” the engine fired right up, and I drove another 45 minutes to home without hiccup.
Fourth Incident: First start of the day; drove three hours to Redmond. Vehicle sat at destination for approximately three hours. Started and drove three blocks, and engine died while approaching a stop sign. After five minute “rest,” the engine fired right up, and I drove three hours back home to Portland without any issues.
Fifth Incident: First drive of the day; engine would not start right out of the garage. Waited five minutes, and it fired right up. Drove various trips that day without further issues.
Sixth Incident: First drive of the day; engine would not start right out of the garage. Waited five minutes, and it started instantly. Drove several short trips that day without further incident.
It has since repeated this behavior on several occasions. It doesn’t always do this – it’s probably about two to three drives out of five. It usually happens after the truck has been driven some distance and then been shut off for a while. In every case, after cranking and giving up, it will fire up instantly after a five minute wait and drive the remainder of the day without incident.
