Just wanted to write great praise for my new 2002 LC which took me and the family from Austin, Texas to Key West, Florida over the last 3 weeks.

I bought her about 3 months ago and after just an oil change to Mobile 1 and some lube points, we added a Sears (Thule-made) extreme roof top carrier for beach stuff and we headed out early on a Friday morning. Our journey took us through New Orleans, Mobile, Mississippi, Tallahassee through Universal, Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom and ultimately to Key West.

The round trip totaled 3200 miles during which this truck ran through repeated torrential rains without missing a beat or a single incidence of hydroplane-steering or fogged windshield.

With a hefty payload of luggage and car top cargo, the truck never downshifted to maintain speed under cruise control. That may not seem like I'm saying much but every car I've ever owned has had to grab for second to maintain speed. This car had power to spare to pass anything on the road.

The only trouble I had was that my new low beam headlight burned out with just 2 months of use. I'm thinking that it's due for a new lighting setup but even with the low beam burnout, we ran 500 miles a day during daylight hours without affecting the trip. I did notice that when behind an 18 wheeler that the steering seemed to feel a little loose in the slipstream. The steering is not loose otherwise so I suspect just disturbed air.

Regardless, it was the most trouble-free driving experience with the exception of not being able to find a good place for my right foot to stretch it.

Mileage averaged 17-18 at 72mph, 14-15@75
Temperature range was 193-198 with 198 being in traffic on I-10 in Houston for 45 minutes.
Total spent on gas TBD but worth every drop.

I agree, these are great road vehicles. I just had a similar trip with my 2002 - except that I was pulling a 6,000' trailer in addition to the roof box and fully loaded with people/dogs/gear.

The best thing about the truck is how versitile it is: going out to dinner at the country club, going camping, towing a huge load in CO, four-wheeling at 13.000' in the Rockies, and commuting. It does it all with ease.

Now I wish that I could experience the mileage that you did. Interesting to see the difference in 3 mph speed. Next time I do a trip without the trailer, I'll see what my results are.

We just finished our second cross-country road trip in a year last week. I agree the Cruiser is a rockin' road trip machine. We only got 11-12 MPG, but were pulling a heavy trailer and going fast.

As if I needed a few more beach miles, we took that last minute trip to Port Aransas, a 2x2 mile fishing & family vacation spot on the Texas Gulf Coast (for you non-familiar). I'll definitely say that comparing Key West to Port Aransas is like comparing apples and oranges. Key West has more drag queens and coral beaches and art galleries with double the humidity in August. Port Aransas is only an 1/8th mile ferry ride from the mainland and is also served by a choice of 30-mile beach ride through Corpus Christi. My kids run up and down the beach and out a hundred feet without fear of the longshore current dragging them out to sea. As far as using the Land Cruiser at Key West, it's stuck in the parking area while in Port A, you can ride 30 miles+ of beach putting along and finding the occasional loose dry sand to bounce around on. Avoiding the occasional oilfield worker's or highschooler's F250 diesel 4x4 manic display of horsepower. While we enjoyed the heck out of the ride to Florida to see Disney World, Universal and Hollywood Studios as well as the beauty of the Key's, there was also a lot to appreciate 4 hours away from home. Sometimes you have to go away to appreciate what you have. Other times it's just damn nice to get away. The Landcruiser is certainly a great lens through which see either option and come back home again.

Texas993, definitely want to know about your towing experience at that weight as an RV is in the future. I was trying to keep my sight on the 4000 pound towing area for the sake of wear and tear.

Love to share and help. Here is a pic without gear or Thule box.
