Here are some shots of this noobies first mod to my '97 40th anniv. The stock stereo was in serious need of a shot of steriods. I really wanted to squeeze a 10" into the stock location but soon realized it was going to be difficult. In the end, that ended up being a huge understatment. I used 5/8" MDF to conserve as much volume as possible. In the end, I created about .7 cubic ft of airspace. I had to boot the storage bin in the name of solid bass and so a filler plate had to be added to the enclosure. I have since finished the enclosure in Oak colored vinyl but I'm not happy with the wrinkly results. May try carpet or a combination of the two next.

After about 3 days total install time, I have so say I am very happy with the results. The best part is that I had most of the stereo equipment stuff already laying around the garage. I installed one amp under the driver's seat and the other in the cavity by the jack.

Got a pic of the final install?

Make sure your beauty strip on the lower outside window edge is sealed. Good chance that it leaks water into the ds rear quarter. Both sides leaked on my rig and shorted out the amps. Pull the strips and use some caulking in and around the mounting wholes. Many post on this!

Looks nice.

Thanks for the heads up on the leaky window seals. Rain is such a rare occurance for us desert dwellers but I want to do everything I can to make sure my stereo keeps on kickin for as long as possible.

I'll try to take some pics of the final install this weekend. I may re-do the vinyl then too.

Here's a shot of the final product but me thinks I will be redoing the vinyl because it looks like wrinkly poop.

I like it a lot. How much airspace is in the box? Is that a 10" sub?

Speaker box carpet works great (I guess that's why they call it speaker box carpet). Walmart's version of "automotive grade" carpet is the same as what speaker carpet is and works great too. I've also gone to fabric shops and used velour or headliner material. The inside of my '85 pickup is done in headliner material. It's standard cloth with about a 1/8" foam backing. My website has some pictures of a couple of the interiors I've done. Both trucks have door panels done in the headliner material. the tan interior has a wood mounting plate for the door speaker mount, and a carpeted strip over the bottom of the door. The blue interior has speaker box carpet on the custom bench in the x-tra cab, and speaker carpet along the bottom strip of the doors:

I'm in the same boat with my '90 4Runner in terms of a good location for a sub (granted it doesn't have 3rd row seats). I may just get a bazooka tube and be able to move it around or remove it completely when I need to haul stuff. That may get annoying though....
