buckhorn would be great! but no bro, you dont owe me nothin. i just really appreciate the input. im still dealing with this problem but i got called off it for work and life in general. im gonna figure it out though. im thinkin now i gotta get an amp meter and gover every wire that has to do with the ignition and eventually im gonna find a short. i cant think what else it could be anymore. its gotta be buried in the harness. which sucks but there you have it. thanks.

Here is my 2 cents I think it is rotor or your condenser sometimes they get a spike and burn the layers up. They are measured in micro farads go to the auto parts store and order a new condenser with 1/2 to -1 more microfarad. The rating will be on the casing some ware brings me back to the ol distributor days good luck.

neat! thanx! this is news to me! what do you mean "they get a spike and burn the layers up"?

so i read the read the thread fj40 ignition issue and came to the shortsighted conclusion that maybe i got a bad ballist resistor off the shelf. ordered a new one and put it in. absolutely no difference. also i took a reading with an amp meter off the old b. resistor while it was out of the truck and the #'s were all over the place. nothing near three that was stable and all the way up to twelve. funny thing is..every time i replace anything to do with the ign. this truck she seems to fire for a second or so when i first try her out but then she sputters and dies. also its happened to me that she actually runs for a minute or two but always she seems to load up and die. bought an amp meter recently and im not too familiar with the tool. im thinkin now this problem is IN the harness. anyone got a good idea where i oughts ta start? thanks all in advance an i mean it. been basically grounded for about a fortnight here.

so here it is october and life being the way it can be the troubled cruiser has sat untended these several months. today a buddy and i are going to give one last shot at this baffling problem and if i cant get a result i'm towing her to a shop and and see what they come up with. if anyone has any last suggestions as to what this problem might be, now would be a perfect time to step forward. i want to thank you all again for all of your input in the past and thanx in advance for any that may come in the future. i've learned a lot from all of you even though i've been as yet unable to solve the problem.

i think we got ! i think we got it! that little insulator on the points wire feed through on the distributor! all shattered and destroyed and leaking electricity all about in the wrong places. any one got a good hookup on where i might find that little plastic piece? its the one that barriers the condencer from the dizzy housing. she is a 74 and the engine is an "f' not a "2f". the cowling is round and passes through the dizzy body and cannot be slipped down onto it like the later models. much thanx. i think we got it!
