hi hows it going i own a 1984 fj60 its in good shape and slowly but surley fixin it up.the other day i was driving home and it was running really hot so im thinking that the thermostat is stuck closed but theres other things that led me to believe that the heating core is going out.when i get in it in the morning i can smell antifreeze and its wet on the pasinger side if it is the heater core how do i get to it
thanks matt5783

Don't run hot. first, check the heater valve (which you could bypass in the engine bay to solve yer problem temporarily if you don't need heat anytime soon and if it's your DD). If not this, I would go after the heater core. This is no picnic, you'll have to start taking apart the plastic junglegym under your dash. The housing on the very right is your blower. Left of that is your AC evaporator, left of that is your core. Probably wouldn't hurt to throw in a new thermostat as well just to be on the safe side.

well ive checked the heater valve and its not leaking then i put more water in the radiater and ran the engine to check to see if its the thermastat and water flows through.so every thing is pointing to the heater core. I cant seem to find a new one for under 200.00 i guess ill have to get a used one.i think i found one for 50.00 but before i order it im going to make sure its the core itself not a hose (that can be cracked) leading in to the heater core.so i guess ill start taking it apart soon .do i have to take the blower out first then ac evaperater to get to the core or is their a way i can by- pass these things. just checking before i start the job

Matt ,
I'm in EKA (Henderson Cntr) Pm me if you need a hand. You can easily bypass both heater cores by removing a hose & bypassing the heat valve.

ok ive buy passed the heater core and everythings running nice and cool .now to get to the heater core to chang it out is a whole other moster. everything ive read on this form says ive got to take the dash out to get the core out or discharge the ac to get it out as well .their both pains in the asses so it looks like taking the dash out is the one ill do any one have any short cuts or tips

rather than buy a used core have a radiator shop check out your old one for a re-build. If it can be rebuilt it will be way better than a used un-known.

I agree i checked with nappa and my man russ found me one for $88.00 thats way better then two forty.he's telling me theirs two to chose from im guessing the other one goes under the passinger side.
