Taking apart my 86 fj60 hubs and disc brakes to put them on my 73 fj40 and OH MAN those cone washers just WONT come off. Chisling them sideways to turn them and get them loose but they are just falling apart now. Soaked them in pb blaster too. What a mission. What should I do guys?

pound the hell out of them from the top with a brass hammer or the like. It should only take a few good whacks. They may go flying when they do let loose, you can keep the nut on to prevent them from getting lost and also prevent any damage to the top threads.

try striking the ends of the studs with a brass drift.

should loosen them up within a half dozen strikes at the most

Yep, tap tap tap with the brass drift/hammer on the end of the studs. When reassmbling use anti-sieze to lessen the problem next time!

Use a small flat head screwdriver and put it in the slot of the cone and tap the driver in. The cone will open up and thin pull it out. Do not hit with a dam hammer:rolleyes:

I just went through this about 6 hours ago with my truck.

I wacked hard on the ends of the studs with a light hammer through a brass drift, mixed with LIGHT tapping on the side of the cone washers with the brass drift. Got all 6 off one side in about 5 minutes, had one stubborn one on the other side that took about 5 minutes itself.

Take the time, and remember 2 things.

1. The studs can take a good beating (this is what the FSM says to do to get the washers out) while the washers themselves can't.

2. Use a BRASS drift, brass is softer than steel, and therefore will deform itself, but not distort the steel (if done within reason)

This is the best method.
I either use a small screwdriver or a scribe. Has never failed me yet.

x3
works like a charm :D
as the cone washers expand, there's only one way to go...UP :D

you'll be surprised how easy it is.

ME TOO! TAPTAP TAPPING A SCRIBE INTO THE SLOT WORKED BUT BROKE OFF ON THE LAST ONE. TAP TAP TAPPED ANOTHER ONE IN BEHIND THE FIRST AND GOT IT OUT IN ABOUT AN HOUR. ACTUALY MY GIRLFRIEND GOT IT OUT. (I guess I couldnt find the hole)

I don't like pounding on the ends of the studs. That is a way to damage the threads on the studes. Use the screwdriver method. Get new cone washersa and studs from marlin.

Mine were stuck pretty bad, and I used a combination of small to large flat heads to expand the washers, and used brass hammer on the studs. I had to hit pretty hard, cycle around over and over, and I eventually got them loose with zero deformation on the studs.

This.
Smack the housing hard and they just pop out.
