Toyota did produce a few early versions of the 4 runner removal tops but I can't say I have seen one of these editions, it would appear that the line behind the door is factory and the red strip is actually where the weld line could be. Would be an interesting truck to see in person.

I'm thinking of going to look at it.
I'm trying to find an extended cab truck for a DD.
I have a 95 4 cylinder ranger but it is a reg cab and i'm too big for it. So i've been searching for a ext cab 4x4 that I might be able to trade for my ranger.
I've actually got a free 4 cyl engine out of a 92 mini and bed that I could throw on this one if that is all it needs and they will trade.

I could be wrong here but i have never seen one like this or heard of one like this, and i have been in a few different countries. I have seen some kinda modified like this in some 3rd world countries though.

Greg is right. I had a guy in college that I knew that had what he called a 4runner. I pretty much called him a liar all the time because I think it was called a trailblazer but it def resembled that truck and had seats in the back like a 4runner. I think his was acutally an 83 as well. The back top on his was full length though more like a camper top but it was one space inside.

Could be a cool ride...

You beat me to the punch because I was going to ask how in the world you fit in a Ranger. thats like Shaquille driving a Prius

Cool good to know....
As for your question. I've learned to use the brake, clutch and gas with one foot while my other is out the window :grinpimp:

That is a Toyota-blessed conversion done after the truck arrived in the US but before being sold by a dealer. I want to say Winnebago did the conversions, but that may be inaccurate. The same company did the Trailblazer, which was the precursor to the 4Runner.

That's a really neat truck. I bet a custom oak or some other hardwood bed would look sweet if restored.

If you go look at it be sure to snap some pics of the interior.

I've seen a couple of these for sale back in OK/TX. I haven't actually seen one in person though. It would be good to know whether the add-on is steel or fiberglass. Bob the frame and add a tube bed, like All-Pro's.
tube bed.webp

Get a good look at the frame. Shouldnt be hard with bed off. :hillbilly: The first gens are terrible for rusting out right behind the cab especially on the pass. side.

Look what I found. This dealership was only about 20 mins up into the desert from where I last lived in LA

That was either a dealer installed option or an aftermarket company contracted out to do those conversions. I have seen a couple of them in person, there's a guy here in town that has one. It's not a hack-job, it's a pretty clean conversion from what I remember.

Just another reason why I love MUD. used to see those every once in a while up in VA. Always wondered the story on them.

There is a super hot one out in RENO CL w/ a built 454 and highboy camper :D

The Trekkers were made by Winnebago and Trailblazers by Griffith. These were the predecessors to the 4Runner. All pretty cool lil trucks. The trekker was pretty much an walk thru cab w/ seats in the back like the earlier runners and the trailblazer had the fiberglass cab for second row but retained the outside bed uses.

Trailblazers were also built on Nissan 720 series extended cab 4x4 trucks. I almost bought one back in 87 (was an 84 model). They were the prelude to the 4runner and eventually the fatpounder(err pathfinder). Used the factory bed and cab, cut out to make the walkthru, and grafted on the custom fiberglass cap. They had carpet, interior, and a rear seat. Fit and finish were quite nice considerin they were aftermarket creations.
