I need some new stout u joints for the rear driveshaft on my 87' 60. So i need one for the front and one for the rear of the driveshaft, anyone know anyone that makes strong ones. Also is it something i can do by myself or are there special tools required?
thanks,
mark

OEM on the u-joint. and just a regular table vice will do it. and a socket to pound them out. cleam them up real good so you can see the snap ring to pull them off.

good luck,

yep OEM is the best U-joint, there are some others that are OK but not as good. you need to per driveshaft so 2 for rear, 2 for front.

Vise, hammer, socket(smaller than cap) and 7mm wrench(right Steve) for the zerts. Oh and don't smash you hand with a hammer.........not like I know ;)

make sure when putting them toghether you don't get a loose needle bearing stuck behind the cap/spider, it will not fit and you will bugger up the cap. Also the zerts need to be going the diretction of compression or it might blow the grease out if the other way around(hard to explain but easy when looking at it.

Not hard. Or if you don't want to do it, take the driveshaft out and take it to the driveline shop, they don[t charge much. Can even do one shaft then the other and still drive it when waiting.

last 60 I did was a PITA, one before was a piece of cake. Funny thing the one with only 100k was harder than the one with 340K. Oh and on the front of one of them I found the slip joint was rusted solid, there is a plug that falls out, water gets in, rusts. I hooked one end of shaft to tree, other to my 12k warn.........and eventtually it came apart.
