I've been presented with the opportunity to purchase a very good condition 1HD-FTE for 9k NZD. The price is right, the motor is right, and my plan has always been to drop an FTE into my 105 series. The only issue is time and money.

I can afford the engine just fine, but all of the bits and bobs necessary to complete the conversion/tickle up the motor will have to be accrued over time for financial reasons. It may be 1-2 years before this engine runs again and I'm a bit concerned that it could deteriorate while it sits.

I've read heaps of threads on winterising motors, and understand that it's a lot more complicated than filling it with clean oil and forgetting about it. For context isn't very humid where I live and I'll be storing it in a bone dry shed out of the elements.

In practical terms I'm a total novice to all things mechanical, but very passionate and driven to become more learned and capable. I'm just wondering if I may be biting off more than I can chew, and if it would be better to hold off on buying an engine until I'm ready to crack on with the conversion.

My only worry is that prices could go crazy and I'd end up at square one - not being able to afford it. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated! Thanks

Easy mate. buy the thing for sure, just seal up all the openings, spray it down with WD40, wrap it in plastic and you're golden.

Sweet thanks for the advice, I'd wondered if it might be that simple just didn't want to make a rookie mistake and ruin a nice motor. I'll have a yarn with my mechanic in the coming days & sort out a plan to preserve the thing as well as possible. Cheers man 👍
