Just thinking about a change for daily driver , my 4Runner is really rotten, I spend about $150 a week driving to work and picking my kids up from the in laws after wards, plus as much as I like how tiny my 4runner is I really could use a bigger truck for those times I need to haul crap around, I was thinking of selling my 4runner and buying a bone stock HJ61 automatic ,and keeping it that way just using it to get to and from work and for whatever chores the wife wants done. I am hoping for 18-22 mpg city driving is this realistic ?

i have an 84' HJ60 (2h engine) it gets about 16 mpg round town. But mind you thats not imperial gallons. I have recently put a turbo on it and kept the fueling conservative, im now getting closer to 18 mpg round town.

11-13l/100km is what you can expect from 12ht... No idea how that translates into funny units

I got about 17 mpg driving like an idiot out of my 3B, and about the same from my 7.3 IDI f250, I figured if I drove like a grandma I might get 20 plus out of the 12HT

You will get good mileage from the 61 I have one and $40 of diesel last forever compared to my gasser 62 which eats $80 a week.... go for it you will happy.
I think I know which one you are looking at by your location and it looks like a good 61 and the price is reasonable.

You should easily get as low as 12L /100k if you drive it gently.
I manage to get about 9.9L / 100k if I cruise at 85kph like grandma.
I have a big roof rack, and 33s, mostly with normal driving I'm at 12 - 13L /100.

Keep in mind, auto is going to be a lot worse than manual. Especially around town.

Yes ^^^ on the autos being thirstier round town.... I've owned both, with the autos motor being in exceptional condition and the manual that had been flogged hard still easily outdid it mpg wise around town.... they did return similar mileage with all highway work where the autos converter was locked up most of the time...

Best I've gotten from my manual HJ61 is 10.9L/100kms but average around 11.5-11.8L/100.
Mix of highway and around town driving

I have heard of the best fuel economy coming from these engines.
John from Radd was saying he had very low numbers as low as 9/L/100kms.
77cruiser77 also had really low numbers talking to him.
Tim HJ61 also mentioned good fuel economy.

Stay away from the slush box. I think trying to get a set of 3.73 diffs would help a bunch too. You should easily be able to get 20mpg and all the way up to 24 I would figure after a proper tire correction (use a GPS to figure out your true speed)

Can't beat a VW tdi in terms of fuel economy.

The HJ61 is a brilliant vehicle. I like my 1HZ off road way more than the 12HT but if you only do mild stuff and boot around town and especially the highway then the 12HT is downright awesome. It just cruises and gave me better mileage then my 1HZ ever has.

In terms of space? I could have 12 foot lengths of angle iron if I put it in diagonally completely enclosed. I think that tailgate was 54" wide iirc? Inside its more than 5 feet wide. It's also almost a foot longer than my HZJ77 too. If its space you want then the only way you can beat a HJ61 with a high roof is getting a troopy.

I recently put a 12HT into my HJ60. 5speed on 33's and 3:70's I'm getting well over 850KM's of per tank (90L tank) of mixed driving. I'm averaging ~10L/100km.
Stock fuel and boost setting with a 3" exhaust.

The trick is to stay off the boost.. Which is tough since it just pulls and sounds great! :D
