Hi all.

I actually drive an 80-series LC, but I have reason to believe my axles come from a 70-series, which is why I seek your help.

My 1990 1HDT 80 has a 5-speed manual transmission and OEM part-time manual lockable hubs. From discussions in the 80 and diesel forums, it appears my truck runs 5.29 gears installed by PO (I've got 275 BFG-ATs on stock rims and turn about 2900rpm at 90 km/hr). Speedometer is accurate according to my GPS. I know for a fact that the PO replaced the full-time 4wd with the part-time kit. Is it possible the 5.29s came out of one of his 76/78 LCs? If so, would I be able to swap 3.79s or 4.11s back in without replacing everything else?

Thanks.

Nearly all 7* series have 4.11 and the wide bodied types have 3.909. The only 7* series with 5.29 were some sold in mountainous areas of Europe and they were in small numbers.
I think the diff centres are interchangeable but you would have to check. If you can use 7* diff centres ,then you can use 60 series diffs also.

75 series were 4.11
78/79 1hz were 4.3
78/79 1hd/1fz were 4.1
76/78/79 1vd are 3.9

70's Diff centers from 90 - 99 are interchangeable. Before 90, front diff was the larger 9.5" unit. After 99 the changed to a slightly larger rear ring gear ( still called 9.5" ) and went to larger 32 spline axles.

Also, any 70 series axle (complete) is not interchangeable. Only the diff centers are. You could just throw some standard 80 centers in or regear what you have. 3.73 are fairly rare and expensive, 4.1 stock gearing will be a lot easier to find.

Tell us what the engine revs to at 100 k 57 mph from memory this will help with your diff ratio.
At 100kph I'm at 3100rpm, IIRC.

What gear is that?
