Hello Guys,

Are stock axles assy worth anything?? I will be pulling the stock axles (front and rear) out of my 1962 FJ40 and replacing them. The reason I'm asking in the FJ25 area my 1962 is more like a 25 than a 40.

Don

If the rear axle has the centered diff the housing may be worth something to someone doing a driveline conversion that has centered tcase output to the rear, Fox could probably use the shafts for his 25...also check the ratios, there was an option in the early years for 1:3.36 or something, I found a set in a '61, kinda rare, a heck of a conversation piece when laid out on a coffee or end table...

From the front axle...tie the two balls together with a short rope and tie that assembly to your rear bumper, you get the picture....the Cruise Chick uses the long side inner as a scepter while supervising my work on her LX450

Happy to help!

Don, not worth money. If you know someone who still enjoys running that type of thing it doesn't hurt to have two or three piled up for spares. I actually had to pull apart two sets of front axles to get a pair of decent inners that weren't all worn out. :D

I picked up a spare front axle for my 68 FJ40 years ago. About six months later the guy bought it back, it seems he sold the rear axle to another friend who installed it in his 62 FJ40 to get rid of the centered 3rd member. Everything was fine until he put it in 4WD drive. The front wheels wanted to run faster than the back wheels. Had to replace the front to match the back. I don't know why they didn't just change the 3rd member out in the rear axle I know they wer both coarse slpine. Maybe the stud size were different.I don't know what the gears were but they were higher the the 370s that came in the 60 series. In the old ads that Toyota claimed you could drive all day at 80 MPH must of had these gears in them because I wouldn't do it with a old F135 with 1:4.11 gears. I would think with those high gears and the early four speed mated to a three speed transfer case it would make a all around vehicle able to cruise down the interstate and still gear for off road. Does anyone know if the FJ25 ever had higher gears? I really won't mind having a set. If the gears are higher than the 1:4.11 I would be interested in 3rd members. I really don't need the axles or housing. In all the years I had my 68 (32 years) I've only broken one of the claws on the outer axle. The only reason I found that was I opened it up to install Lock Rights lockers. I think Mike must have been doing one of these Jim Rockford turns where you backup as fast as you can, turn the wheel and hit the the brakes then put it in forward gear and hit the gas to break that axle:rolleyes: Or is this another one of these rust belt things:confused:

My 62 FJ40 has a rear center diff, after the 1st of the year I'm going to get back to work on my 40... not sure what axles I will be running just know the stock axle will not be happy with the V-8:crybaby: I'm going to keep it as stock looking as possible just alittle different under the hood.

Don

Cryo some 10 spline rears while your at it. When I see a broken ball and claw with stock tires I'll start worrying about that. ;)

If you guys get yer acts together I can deliver these axles from Cincinnati to the east coast over the New Year's weekend. :D I gotta go out that way to get a motor for my FJ60...

Toy Teacher: if you wanna hand pulling the axles let me know...

Nick

Not for me Nick, I've got a pile. Maybe Fox could use some spares. :D

When I put together my rear axle for Project Old Fart, I used fj40 center axle housing and brake parts with fj25 axles, the 40 brake drums have a larger center than 25's outer axle flange, they centered with the small screws. So will 40 axles work with 25 brake drums? Thanks, John #3

I have a pair of fine spline ball and claws that I could be coaxed into trading or selling if someone is intersted. Guess theyre out of a 40 or 45?

I think SOR had some of those made a while back for people to put lockers in the front, since there wasn't any lockers in course spline. Not sure though..

I'd be interested to see some pics, is the shaft part actually thicker than a stock shaft??

Better late than never. I was searching and saw that I didnt reply, so here goes.

BUT, the 30 spline end doesnt fit through the ball and claw inner bushing??

Gee Mike I was hoping these would of had a long spline on the driver's side so I could run a E locker in my 25:rolleyes: I guess I will have to be happy with my Torsen diffs:)

My first post on my new phone. I think I'm going to like having internet just about anywhere I go:bounce:
