So what did the fine spline ball and claw axles come in? My 68 was one of the last ball and claw axles to come in a Land Cruiser and I know it's corse spline.

I think these came out of a 1967 FJ45LV? the outer stub axles are still coarse splined. Honestly, I dont remember exactly where I got them from. They are significantly thicker than a stock early coarse spline inner axle. It'll be a good strength upgrade without going birfield,

I dug into the drivers side knuckle and I think I'm the first one to be in there. the grease had " koito" stamped in it it was so old and solid. The outer wheel bearing has seen better days too so I'll be swapping that out as well. I got a set of fine spline spider gears out of a later diff I had (thanks Nick), the outer axle bushings are on order from Tarbox Toyota and should be here in the next day or so. That gives me time to clean things up then its time to throw it all back together. Some day I'll pull the axles out and really go through them, but this is to make the axle functional and reliable, not restoration.

I got the bushings in a milk crate of parts. If I remember they were supposed to fit '68, but when looking at the parts book the application overlapped with the other bushings. Could have been a market / model thing? All I know is I finally found a home for 'em.

Mike, throw a 30 spline lock-right up front..........that should be fun with drive plates!!

That really isn't a problem as long as your in 2WD. My 68 has a lock-right in the front and works fine with hubs locked while in 2WD. It's the manual steering and a lock-right that is a killer. I keep the hubs in free and use low range with the lock-right in the rear and get thru most places. The problem is I can't seem to get my 25 into low range:rolleyes:

One side is back together using the best outer bushings that I have and the new larger ID inner bushing and 30 spline inner axle . The stub shaft is a little sloppy but better than what was in there. the machine shop did a great job turning down the step on the OD of the inner bushing. I used a wheel cylinder hone and cutting oil to ream out the bushing once it was installed. It took a little while but it worked fine.
