stock antenna mounting

I had an oem antenna, but the po had a different antenna installed.
When I got the antenna there was no way to install it. Need to know if there was a metal "backing plate" to mount the antenna or what.

Also looks like the po decided to possibly make the holes to a "custom" size. What is the radius of the 2 holes?
thanks

I don't know about the radii but the upper hole is for the antenna mast holder.
lower hole for the boot at bottom of mast.

looks to me like the holes were enlarged, but I think you will be able to come up with something.

Also In previous posts I have seen the same set up presented on both sides of the vehicle -can anyone shed some light on that?

I believe usually the double masts are 1 for the radio and 1 for a CB.

Antenna comes with a "sheet metal" type screw. It is a no brainer to install one. Just want to know if they mount to a backing plate, etc.
My upper part in post #2 basically can "fall " right into the hole. Bottom one doesn't fit either.

I have the cheapy $10 antenna that JTO sells. It is a POS. HAs anyone found a better quality aftermarket antenna?

This one that CCOT is the one I'm using for my radio. Works fine.

Well I like this design but it is so old (and out in the weather ALL the time) that it is looking a bit shabby now:

I can't remember where I bought it from - But then I'm a long way away from you so you wouldn't care anyway.

Again- just need size of stock holes, and do the 2 pieces holding the antenna in place mount to a "backing plate" etc.

Let me throw my $.02 in the fray.... I seriously doubt that there was a factory antenna. I suspect that radios in the era were dealer installed and while the radio may be a Toyota item, the antenna may well not be but just be whatevet the dealer/parts guy chose. On my 78 which was original there was only one hole and the broken off base of the 'original antenna'. The type of antenna my truck had I suspect was one of the universal type of side mounts sort of like the one in the pic of the blue 40. If you are looking for something to fill both the holes you have, I'd suggest you search around for a VW bus type antenna...the type that have two mounting pieces and mount on the side. I recall from my youth that this style was also used on the bugs of the era...
Most imported cars of the 60s and 70 did not come off the boat with radios, so again, it was up to the dealer, or the owner. Hope this help a bit.

On my 78, which looks more or less like LLEE's picture (black piece at top and another at bottom) and I think is original, the mounts were cracked and the antenna hanging when I got it. Went to Toyota and just told the parts guy "78 FJ40", he ordered the mounts and when they came in they looked just like the originals. So I would think they must be "factory" part numbers, etc.? Maybe no factory radio meant no antenna shipped on the vehicle and thats when a dealer installed an after-market setup?

backing plate...I think no?. mabey a bolt & washer max?
-you will need to engineer something as I think your hole/s have/has been somewhat enlarged.
BTW the photo from #2 is from SOL (SOR), my rig has no radio, I am not liking it, some jams, you know. 'Journey' or something.

I have a Duck on passenger side cowl for a head with an IPOD input, but have not installed head yet... Will be jamming soon.

Manual shifter and a radio- the basics
ps how can you not like 'Journey'?
pps; "dealers"...say it aint so

The EPC lists the antenna for the FJ40, FJ55, and BJ40.
Old Part # 86300-35020 listed for 3/69- 1/73
Old Part # 86300-60010 listed for 9/72- 1/73 FJ40 only
Old Part # 86300-60010 listed for 1/73- 7/80 FJ40,55 and BJ40

Your probably correct that it was a dealer installed item...
